Isles' prospect Hughes arrested

Islanders farmhand Bobby Hughes has been arrested on first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree criminal sexual act charges filed in Albany. The 21-year old Hughes, acquired by the Islanders from Carolina in August and playing infrequently for the Sound Tigers, was arrested after Bridgeport’s game on Wednesday.

— Chris Botta, NYI Point Blank

Hughes, who is from the Toronto area, starred with the Kingston Frontenacs a few years back and was a fourth-round pick of the Hurricanes in 2006. He has played sparingly so far in his AHL career, but did play in Albany in 2007-08 and 2008-09 which would appear to be tied to what's happened here.

Very little information available right now.

Definitely not good news. Hopefully the legal process is able to get to the truth in the situation, and ensure justice.

not too funny…look up what first and third degree criminal sexual charges are in the state of NY…Very, very serious chargers here, no need to make lame jokes.

It sounds basically like those are rape charges of some sort.

This isn’t the first prospect to have serious charges of this nature leveled against him: David McKee, a former Ducks prospect and a former ECAC standout was charged with felony counts of rape of an unconscious person and rape by intoxication in June after an incident in the summer of 2006. [Link]

I remember that case, any idea when we’re going to find out more? Google doesn’t find anything after the June allegations… That’s really the type of situation where it’s good to keep “innocent until proven guilty” in mind until the court proceedings.
