If the playoffs started today...
I usually put this together a couple times a year just to see where everyone sits in the standings. An awful lot can change, and injuries and the Olympics will be a big factor down the stretch, but at least we can look back and see where we were at the one-third mark (or so).
Based on projected point totals, here are the 16 current playoff teams and where they'd slot in:
Eastern Conference
(1) New Jersey vs. (8) Four teams tied
There's a huge logjam at the bottom of the East right now that includes the Habs, Rangers, Lightning and Flyers, all of which are on pace for just 82 points. That'd be by far the weakest team postlockout to make the playoffs. The Devils, meanwhile, have been very impressive even without Paul Martin.
(2) Washington vs. (7) Ottawa
The Capitals are hardly a surprise for being at the top of the heap and are on pace to finish 13 points higher than any other club in the Southeast (which remains weak). And the Sens have managed to stay just a little bit above the dog pile — but not much.
(3) Buffalo vs. (6) Atlanta
A hot rivalry heats up? (No, not so much.) Two teams I think few picked to be in playoff positioning but which are excelling due to great goaltending more than anything. Will it last?
(4) Pittsburgh vs. (5) Boston
The Penguins like that 4-5 slot, don't they? And it's always a tough, tough matchup. Winning the Atlantic won't be as tough as it has been unless the Rangers or Flyers get it together, but you don't want to fall into this spot against a team like the Bruins in Round 1.
Western Conference
(1) Chicago vs. (8) Dallas
The Blackhawks have been the class of the NHL so far, on pace for 116 points despite missing Marian Hossa and with Cristobal Huet in net. The Stars, meanwhile, are probably in for a big fight for that final spot given Detroit, Vancouver and Columbus are all right below them.
(2) San Jose vs. (7) Colorado
Just like the Capitals, the Sharks are expected to be here, beating up on a lower seed (in theory, anyway). The Avs keep hanging around after their incredible start, but like Dallas, will have some big time challengers in the teams just below them.
(3) Calgary vs. (6) Nashville/Phoenix
Talk about a couple interesting matchups. The Flames have impressed me, mainly due to the play of Miikka Kiprusoff and Jay Bouwmeester, and I think they'll win the Northwest handily. The Preds and Coyotes, meanwhile, are the feel-good stories so far — it'd be nice to see either of those low-salaried teams find some success despite the odds.
(4) Los Angeles vs. (5) Phoenix/Nashville
The Kings are way better than I thought they'd be; at this point, I think Terry Murray deserves some legitimate consideration as coach of the year. Whereas they couldn't score to save their lives at even strength last season, L.A. is now a dangerous offensive team even with Alex Frolov coming up lame. They've allowed more goals than any other team in playoff position, however, and that's a big worry over the next couple months.
How many of these teams do you think hang onto their spots?

When does the Colorado/Detroit swap occur?
by Fultron on Dec 11, 2009 4:13 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Maybe if some of our forwards start coming back. Now Cleary is out for a month. That’s four of the top twelve forwards from the start of the season out now. It’s turning into a disaster of a season, and I wouldn’t be shocked to miss the playoffs this year. I’m not overly distraught about it, though, since it had to happen sometime.

It would be a Colorad- Vancouver swap. Vancouver is the team that will come into the top eight when the Avs finally realize they have no talent.

lol. yeah, an 18-10-6 record is easily achieved by a team with no talent. keep telling yourself that.

Which is closer to the team’s true talent? The 10-1-2 start, or the 8-9-4 record since then? Given that the start was founded on a whole lot of high shooting percentages, and given that the team was awful last year and hasn’t undergone the kind of makeover Philly did in ‘07, I’m going with the latter. It’s not a no-talent team, but it’s not a playoff team; if it does make it, it’ll be due to that torrid start.

whether or not the team can be compared to philly, it did go through a fantastic makeover. and i am not saying this is a deep playoff team. it’s not. what’s important, though, is that it certainly will not end up anywhere near the 13-15th seed EVERYONE predicted it would be which means there IS talent on this team. (in fact, i would argue the avs will be fighting for a 6-8 playoff seed come march.) fortunately, the talent on the team is made up primarily of rookies who will only get better as the years go on. in three years, the avs will be a legitimate cup contender.

I just have to add this; then I'm done here...
Having just watched the Avs-Flames game, I cannot understand how anyone who understands anything about hockey could say that the Avalanche have no talent unless the purpose is simply to insult the team and its fans. If you get the chance, watch the replay of that game on Center Ice. If you don’t, watch highlights. Then be honest with yourself. And please note that half-way through the season, the Avs are 2nd in the Western Conference. Without talent, they would not be there. I concede they will not stay there, but you must concede that their talent put them where they are now.

ok, so I'm not done...
only because I just realized you’re a Flames fan.
I guess you did watch that game tonight, huh? you know…the one where that so-called no talent team beat your favorite team and moved ahead of them in the standings. Calgary is 0-3 against the Avs now, aren’t they? Must hurt to lose that often to a team with no talent. lol. NOW I’m done.
You mean the Avs aren't going to get the top draft pick this summer???

Who, in their right mind, would ever claim that the Avs lack talent
The Avs may be missing a few pieces, but even an old I-Roc, that is up on blocks in some Gino’s yard down by the Jersey shore, possesses the potential to become a powerful muscle machine.
And it doesn’t even need to rely upon the collapse of the former Detroit giant, that can no longer produce its once proud model. All it takes is a little tinkering and the thing will once again terrorize the road with mad rubber.

I agree with you
The Avs have talent, It’s just a lot of people are discounting it because it’s a lot of rookies.
Galiardi, Wilson, Duchene, Stewart and O’Reilly have been essential in this season. And Throw in the Anderson & Quincey additions and I’m not sure how anyone can say this team didn’t have a makeover (as well as the fact that the Avs coaching staff was dramatically improved as well).
Also, that 15th place team last year was in 8th at the 1/2 way mark of the season, they had talent last season and had the perfect storm of bad luck last season, with injuries, career-low seasons, and plain bad luck (2nd worst in league in shooting %).

Yeah I don’t like the Chicago-Dallas matchup at all. Unfortunately the stars will probably only make the playoffs in the eighth seed and play a tough team like the Hawks.

The Sabres head to head record against Atlanta has been pretty bad over the past two years. I would not want to see that matchup…

The Los Angeles and Nashville series would be the ones series nobody would like to see. Even the visually impaired.
Wouldn’t like to see the Stars because the last time the ‘Hawks finished first overall and got the Stars in the 1st round it didn’t work out all too well. Sob.

clearly you haven’t watched a kings game this year, in particular the kopitar-smyth-williams line and defenseman drew doughty, not to mention their goaltender quick who is every bit his name. and no, i am not a fan. in fact, i am generally hoping they lose and quite frustrated with how well they play.

It’s not a slap in the face to the Kings (who I love to watch as they’re very exciting), but more of a slight towards the Predators who mimic NJ in every way shape and form. It may get them in the playoffs but not much further. But their style of play may get the Kings trapped from time to time making this series excruitatingly boring.

If the Phoenix Coyotes manage to grab 8th in the West, that will be a miracle. Speaking of coach of the year, how about Dave Tippet if the Yotes make the second season?

Sadly,
Tipp doesn’t have the greatest playoff track record. He had 2008, and that was it. Believe me, I know.

Though to be fair, one year Luongo beat Turco in an epic goalie battle and in a couple of others, Turco plain old fell apart. I’m not sure how much of that’s on Tippett.

Columbus...
will make the playoffs again this year. Mason is starting to get his act together after an early season slump and once Rusty’s back and Commodore is at 100% we’ll stop giving up so many goals. We’ve got the #2 ranked power play right now and Nash is on pace to score 40-50 goals this year.

The 1st, 2nd and 4th seeds are going to be in constant flux due to the teams. Pittsburgh and New Jersey are in a dogfight for the atlantic and top spot, and Washington is going to be trying to make a run at top spot
