Canada names world junior camp roster
Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League announced on Wednesday that 36 of Canada's top junior-aged hockey players (born in 1990 or later) have been invited to take part in Canada's National Junior Team selection camp from December 12-16, 2009 in Regina, Sask.
Of the 36 players invited, seven are returning players - having won gold medals at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa. Thirty-one of the players named to the selection camp roster were drafted in either the 2008 or 2009 NHL Entry Draft, including fourteen first-round selections and six second-round picks.
The NHL's St. Louis Blues have confirmed that they will loan defenceman Alex Pietrangelo (King City, Ont.) to Canada's National Junior Team, and he will be at the selection camp in Regina.
Hockey Canada may still add additional players prior to the opening of the selection camp on December 12, in the event that any other NHL teams loan Canada's National Junior Team junior-aged eligible players currently playing in the NHL.

Should be a good squad
still amazes me how good this team would be if none of their players were in the NHL right now.

Tyler Toffoli
Tyler Toffoli of the 67s has been on fire for the last few weeks. He was recently named CHL Player of the Week. At 17, he may not have made the team, but if nothing else the camp experience would have helped him for next year.
For sure...
..if McFarland warrants a look-see, so should Toffoli. 16 points in his last 6 games. Was a strong player at the Ivan Hlinka and had points in the Subway Series.

what are the chances of Hodgson actually making the team? He is yet to play a game for the Batallion this year, it seems he’s still injured.

Cody
My sources tell me that Cody is skating with Brampton but there’s no date for his return.
He hasn’t played a hockey game since last spring’s AHL playoffs.
Even if he’s healthy I can’t imagine he’ll be in game shape to play in the WJC.
Playing the Peterborough Petes is one thing, playing Team Russia is quite another.
He did play in the NHL preseason, did he not?
Game shape = the round robin. 4 games, starting with Latvia, then Slovakia and Switzerland, than the USA (first real challenge). If he can play in the pre-tournament games as well, then he should be pretty much up to speed for the medal rounds.
Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.
There’s simply too much talent in Canada to take a flyer on what Cody might bring to the party. Has not had any serious ice time in a long time. He shouldn’t even be on this list but it’s politics. If Tyler Cuma does not get an invite due to a slow start, Hodgson shouldn’t be on the list either (I know – different positions).

Cuma was never a lock for a spot at any point even if he was healthy. Hodgson was Canada’s top player at age 18 last year. There’s a HUGE difference.
An anology would be if Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin or Henrik Zetterberg were injured for the whole year so far but was targeted to return in February. Would their respective national teams not include them on their roster for the Olympics if they thought there was a chance they’d be back? Hodgson is the same thing at the junior level.

Or, to use a real-world example, Andrei Markov. If he’s back by February, you bet your ass he’s on Russia’s top pair.

Since he’ll be back after Christmas/New Year’s, yeah he’s on Russia’s top pair.

Is he? I had remembered the original prognosis being February/March. That’s good; the Habs have managed not to fall into a deep, dark hole without him as I feared (go OT record!), and having him back by the halfway mark will do wonders for keeping them in playoff contention.
(Aside: why the everloving hell does the NHL’s standings page default to divisional? Divisional standings have been mostly irrelevant since 1994.)

He’s skating right now, pretty much everyday for the past week. To be fair, he claimed early January as his target, but a lot of people say unless there’s a setback, it could be right after Christmas. It sounds like the recovery has been an absolute success right from the initial surgery on out.

That’s fantasic news.

IIRC, he (Cums) pretty much made the squad last year until the injury.

Man I wish we were able to edit our posts..
…of course I meant Cuma (shouldn’t try to type and watch TV at the same time)

I don’t know how many games he played in the preseason but he missed an entire month of summer training. His play in preseason was so not up to NHL standards that sending him back to Brampton was a no-brainerr.
I’ve been a Bampton season ticket holder since the NHL lockout and am a huge Hodgson. fan. I’d love nothing more to see him on the team again.
However, I have my doubts as to whether he can get up to speed in three weeks and I doubt Team Canada is going to use the pre tournament games and round robin for a player—-even Hodgson— to get into game shape. And why would Team Canada want to take a chance filling a roster spot with a potentially iffy player withall the talent available.?

I hope to see both Shawn Lalonde and Dylan Olsen make the squad as it always nice to gauge the ‘Hawks young talent. With that said though, with Pietrangelo returning from the Blues it’s highly unlikely that both will make it. Should be another great team in another great tournament.
James, are you planning on having any game threads here for this tournament?
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
I usually try and follow it as close as I can, although this year’s going to be more of a challenge than ever. For the big games involving Canada and the U.S., I’ll have some commentary, anyway.

The Kings should have 3 people on the team, right? Brayden Schenn, Colten Teubert, and miserable traitor Brandon Kozun?
The West Coast is the Best Coast.
Miserable traitor Brandon Kozun? WTF? Are you referring to the erroneous entry on NHL.com that has him being from LA (where he was drafted) rather than Calgary (where he plays junior)? Because dude’s from Calgary, I can guarantee you that.

No greater Canadian villian since… I don’t know, you guys are all pretty nice, but someone bad.
The West Coast is the Best Coast.
Seriously? Every source I’ve ever seen says he’s from Calgary. Furthermore, I figured that since we never saw a story about the hometown kid being drafted by the team he grew up with that the LA thing was a mistake. Gotta admit, that’s an awful lot of symmetry. I stand corrected.
As for a Canadian villain…Brett Hull was born in Belleville. Will he do?
