Yahoo! Sports takes on the world juniors

Here's something great to see: Long-time friend of the blog, Bruce Peter, is going to be Yahoo! Sports' man on the scene for the world junior tournament in Saskatchewan this year, providing updates from the games and anything else going on in Saskatoon.

Bruce AKA "saskhab" has been commenting on my site for years (and is a moderator here at FTR), and when I'd heard Yahoo! was looking for someone in the city to blog on the tourney, I was happy to mention his name. I haven't met Bruce in person, but I know from his comments — which often correct my errors — and chatting with him on email that he knows his junior hockey.

He signed up on this blog the very first day it launched here at SB Nation and has since posted nearly 900 comments — more than anyone but me — the past year. And now he's the competition.

That's good stuff.

(As an aside to all this, I should add that I still read every single comment here and appreciate the conversation we often get going. I remember back in my preblogging days how difficult it was to find intelligent hockey debate online, and hopefully the small crew here manage that more days than not. Contributors like Bruce are proof of the talent that's here, that's for sure.)

Agreed on the difficulty in finding good hockey commentary once upon a time. Of course, I remember back into the pre-internet days when finding NCAA hockey scores was a challenge. With games on Fridays and Saturdays, the only hope for getting scores from other conferences was to call a friend on the phone, or wait for Monday’s newspapers in the hope that one of them would at least print some of the scores from the eastern conferences.

Great stuff, Sask.

Unfortunately, Yahoo or whoever is in charge is doing a poor job on coverage. There’s nothing on the main hockey(NHL) page advertising your blog or World Junior coverage. I can only see a link to it on the main page when you click on Blogs tab where it has Headlines, Blogs, Rumors, and Buzzed. It’s not even listed in the Yahoo Sports Blogs section on the right. An event with huge television coverage and audiences in Canada, and there’s nothing on the main page of Yahoo Sports Canada for the World Juniors. That’s brutal.

Sorry, the above should say “It’s not even listed in the Yahoo Sports Blogs section on the left.”

I think it’s probably due to the holidays and staffing issues.

Yahoo gives more attention than ESPN though.

Early suprise of the tournament

Sweden 10, Czech. Republic 1?
Never thought I’d se the day the Czech’s would fall this far, from winning the first 2 Gold medals in this decade (2000 and 2001) to losing 10-1 to the Swedes in 2010.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

And Austria is making the Swedes work for it today. Hockey is a funny sport some days…
