A new look for Maple Leaf Gardens
I'm actually a couple days behind posting this, but in case you missed it, there's finally a plan for Maple Leaf Gardens. Ryerson University, my alma mater, is partnering with a local grocery store chain to rebuild the interior by 2011.
As an alumn, I plan on skating there often.
More here and a photo gallery of the interior as it is now here.

The best part of this is that The Eyeopener, Ryerson’s student paper, got the story first.

One of the highlights of my hockey fandom was driving 9 hours to Toronto, watching a Leafs/Avalanche game, going to the Brass Rail after and getting a lapdance next to Peter Forsberg, and then driving 9 hours home.
I wish the Loblaw’s much success.

With all the misty-eyed nostalgia for Maple Leaf Gardens, has any thought been given to putting up a plaque to remember the boys who were preyed upon by pedophiles while working there?
I’m sure that’s exactly what the victims want. “On this spot in 1977 Gordon Stuckless touched my no-no place.”
So does that mean I’ll be able to pick up a jug of milk after the morning skate?

It’s nice to see that these old buildings are being repurposed and specifically that this one is keeping a skating rink of some sort. I know Montreal’s renovation of the Forum into an indoor entertainment center was controversial, but it keeps some of the history of the place alive. As a Bostonian it’s sad to think back on the old Garden and that they just leveled it rather than trying to keep it around and do something special – relocate the New England Sports Museum there, have a grand waiting area for North Station, keep a small rink for local use…nope, instead, it’s a parking lot.
A grocery store may seem tacky, but this is much more dignified than the fate our Garden met.
