Talk about a tough week for the Panthers

Bryan Allen smacks teammate Gregory Campbell into next week after Robert Nilsson deftly avoids the hit. I haven't seen an update on Campbell's condition that describes the injury, but hopefully he's okay.

Just imagine the outrage if this happened to one of the NHL bigwig’s sons.

Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

Brian Burke can rest easy, because we just made doing that to his son a hate crime down here in the States.

I’ve been saying this all day, and I’ll say it again. If you thought Ballard should have been suspended for what he did to Vokoun, then how can you not think the same about Bryan Allen? Allen hits an unsuspecting player who doesn’t even have the puck. Not to mention that his elbow (or at least the area between the middle of his bicep and elbow) makes contact with Campbell’s head. Imagine if he hit an opponent? Wouldn’t a 2-game suspension seem almost automatic, or even too light? How is that hit not as bad as Matt Cooke’s hit on Artem Anisimov? Swap the elbow for jumping, and you have the same hit.

I don’t think either should be suspendible, but if you think that one should and the other shouldn’t, then you are just as consistent as the NHL’s wheel of justice.

Neither should have a suspension

The fact you injured a teammate is punishment enough.

I need a new sig, since i think I cursed ORLY by promoting him.

Campbell did not make the trip to Columbus for Wednesday’s game.

Maybe Soup can hire Ballard to take out Allen.

OK, every Campbell that is in the NHL can’t be nicknamed Soup. Brian made it first, he gets the nickname until he isn’t in the league anymore.

I believe Brian Campbell is “Soupy.”

I just assumed that was his teammates putting their own lame spin on his actual nickname. Like “Jonesy” and such. Speaking of which, do you think they call Brendan Witt “Witty”? Probably not, because that would actually be a good one.

The Leafs seem to just shorten everything. Stage, Poni, Beauch, Komi, etc. Gustavsson is just Jonas or Monster, Toskala is Vesa. Although there are some Blakeys and Whiteys in there.

You gotta earn a good nickname. Speaking of which PPP, we need to get on a good nickname for Kessel.

by Belligerent Burkie on Dec 8, 2009 11:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve heard of people nicknamed Cue Ball. I think Kessel’s nickname should just be a variation on that.

First time we’ve seen a hit like that that hasn’t involved a huge scrum after the fact.

by Jevant on Dec 8, 2009 3:43 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That has got to hurt. That is the type of hit that can cause serious damage.

Colin Campbell was Soupy during his playing days. Everybody – even the fans – called him that in Vancouver. I don’t know whether he was the first Campbell to have that name, but I think it probably gets hung on all Campbells these days. Its easier than trying to shorten Campbell. Campi? Belli? Campibelli?

Baseball manages to have some interesting nicknames. interesting nicknames. El Hombre. (Think St. Louis Cardinals history to get it.) The Big Unit. Pronk. The Greek God of Walks. Light Rail.

I’m not sure what hockey’s problem is.
