Weight out 6 weeks; so much for renting

On the heels of Andy McDonald signing a contract extension with the Blues, Doug Weight is now expected to be out six weeks with an MCL injury (per Newsday's Greg Logan in his chat). The rental market for centers gets even smaller.

Weight was injured in last night's 4-2 Islanders loss in New Jersey -- the third injury this year for him. Along with Mark Streit, his presence at the point has been critical to the Islanders' mid-range-level powerplay, for a team that has lots of trouble 5-on-5. So, rest-of-season outlook: even worse.

He's expressed interest in staying on Long Island all season long, but he was also their best UFA/rental asset to deal at the trading deadline.

Time for Plan B.

Sorry

But this has to be good news for teams with a 6’6" centreman right?

Heh

Trade-wise? Yes.
Top lottery pick-wise? “You will never get this, you will never get this, la-la-la.”

1) It doesn’t prevent a trade, but significantly reduces his value. They probably could have recieved a late first or second round pick/decent prospect for him.
2) Now with Weight being out until mid/late March a team wouldn’t gamble more than a mid round pick. Would the Isles be better off retaining him at that price? Probably.
3) Could this make a trade of Comrie MORE possible?

Weight will be out past the trade deadline. His trade value is gone.

I wasn’t banking on a 1st-rounder — I figure teams have learned by now, right? — but you never know when a GM gets desperate … if only Waddell had his team on the cusp of the playoffs, man.
