Lemieux gets beat up
Theo Peckham gives Claude Lemieux, 22 years his elder, a pretty sound mini-thrashing. This was Lemieux's first "fight" since Oct. 01, 2002, when he scrapped with Jarkko Ruutu in the preseason.
I think we know why.
UPDATE Here's Sharks beat writer David Pollak on his blog, Working the Corners:
Lemieux provided what has to be the top quote of the year so far — “He beat up an old man. That’s not much for his resume” — and that was in the print edition, but here’s what else Lemieux had to say about the game and his role in it:
“There wasn’t much emotion in our game at all and we needed something going. You got the group motivated to be a little more physical and that’s what we needed. . . . It’s not about fighting. It’s about being physical, it’s about being intense. And it’s got to start somewhere.
“Things you learn over time, being a veteran player, you learn when you need a little injection of emotion in the game and tonight was good.”

I love that your site...
… is pimping out Russian mail-order brides now, James.
I can see the future conversation…
“How’d you meet?”
“Well, I was arguing over who the best defensive forward on the San Jose Sharks was, and then I saw this ad, and realized how lonely I was and…. well, you can’t describe true love.”
Anyways, beating the elderly is good fun.
Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

Haven’t seen that one yet. But glad I could help set you up.

Lemieux and Ruutu fought? Wait…I thought these instigator types went around slew-footing and highsticking guys, and never had the “guts” to stand up for themselves?

After Lemieux’s hit on Draper long ago, I always just feel a bit happier inside when I see him socked in the face. I know it’s been more than a decade now, but I still feel the same.

Wow, I didn’t know I’d actually enjoy Claude the Fraud’s return, but this is good…
More fun than a stick to the face!

Nice little warmup for Claude’s first trip to Joe next Wednesday. SJ may have saved him from the Wings’ visit to SJ in January (calling up Claude immediately after that game) but there’s no escaping Draper and McCarty next week.

1) His ass kicking just pounds home(sorry) the fact that the Sharks will need more ‘muscle’/toughness than a old has-been like Lemieux if they want to change their annual habit of losing in the spring

I think Jody Shelley fits the bill perfectly.
I don’t think the Sharks need for muscle to compete in the playoffs. The fact that Lemieux gets beat up is irrelevant in this matter – he was not signed and brought up to be an enforcer.
What the Sharks need in order to have success in the playoffs is their best players actually playing as good as the regular season.

The Sharks are the biggest team in the league. They don’t need more size.

Yeah, Lemieux lost pretty handily in this one, but its not like the Sharks are lacking in “toughness,” as you say. The Sharks’ enforcer Jody Shelley was out with a lower body injury, and the other two enforcer-types both fought as well (Staubitz and Semenov). Clowe also got roughing, and the two others on the second line (Pavelski and Michalek) who have both been criticized in the past for being too soft both jumped into the various brawls throughout the game with no hesitation. The only players that have fought this season that didn’t at least get a roughing in the game were Joe Thornton and Douglas Murray (although Thornton looked like he wanted to go at the end of the second).

Include the quote!
“He beat up on an old man,” Lemieux said when told of the age discrepancy. “That’s not much for his résumé.”-Pollock (blog and print)

Ah, it reminds me of the sign I saw once, somewhere other than Detroit, that read, “Will punch Claude Lemieux for food.” My answer was that I’d punch Claude Lemieux for free.

Can’t completely dog Lemieux, since he helped my Dev’s win 2 Cups.

Who says that Claude is over the hill? He still turtles like a teenager.

I haven’t ever known Lemieux to be much of a fighter, but instead more of a cheap shot artist.

I am not sure Lemieux would be able to crack the roster if Torrey Mitchell, Marcel Goc, Thomas Plihal, Jeremey Roenick and Jody Shelley were all healthy. That is 5 out of a possible 6 players on the 3rd and 4th lines. Throw in Grier and Cheechoo, and one of those players would be sitting in the press box as well.
Other teams have to move Clowe, Marleau, Thornton, Setoguchi, Michalek and Grier from in front of the crease, and Clowe and Murray can more than hold their own when dropping the gloves. San Jose’s size and toughness is fine.
