Senators fire Hartsburg
Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. where he will announce the firing of head coach Craig Hartsburg. Hartsburg is believed to have ripped into the players following Sunday’s 7-4 loss to the Washington Capitals after finally having enough of his team’s unwillingless to compete.
I'm actually surprised it took this long given the way they've played.
Greg Wyshynski makes the right point here, that there were far better choices at coach available when Hartsburg was unearthed to take this job. He had failed miserably in two previous stops and this was by no means an easy task given the way the Sens flopped in the second half of last season.
And Pete DeBoer has worked miracles in Florida so far.
Ben at Sens Army has some damning comments on the organization's future, which looks pretty bleak in the near term. They've been such a strong team for so long that there aren't a lot of Grade A prospects in the pipeline:
The team is going no where, and the coaching switches are only serving to reenforce the worst aspects of the organization: scapegoating and hesitation. Arrogant comments from Melnyk last week serve only to illustrate how Murray and Melnyk are missing the point with this firing. Martin Gerber had three years of failure in Ottawa before being sent away, why did Hartsburg only get 48 games to prove himself? (Kind of off-topic, but I can't help but make this connection.)
This is a desperate move from Murray, and the variables are continually being narrow from this point in the season onward. If it's not the coaching, and it's not the players, then who's left? Murray's painted himself into a corner, and it's only a matter of time before the firing squad turns to him.
I personally don't see any way you stick with Murray after all of the failures since that run to the finals in 2007. The team has essentially been dismantled, save for the big three, and has a long road of rebuilding ahead.
There are no free-agent solutions for what ails Ottawa.
Scapegoating is a good description of what's gone on, and it's something that's plagued both the coaches and goalies in the organization. Ray Emery and John Paddock were run out of town last season only to watch this current group of underachievers (including the GM) continue to underachieve to an even greater extent. Gerber wasn't good this season, but he was also the backup netminder, making only 14 starts and posting an .899 save percentage that is miles better than what netminders like Chris Osgood, Vesa Toskala, Mathieu Garon and Manny Legace have managed this season.
The bizarre thing about blaming Gerber is the fact that this is the lowest scoring team in the NHL this season.
This is a one-line team that was blown out in the Stanley Cup finals by Anaheim after the Ducks shutdown that one line, and nearly two years later, that issue hasn't been addressed. No player outside of that big three has had more than seven goals this season.
Currently 28th in the league, Ottawa is much, much closer to a lottery pick than making the playoffs. Given the way the season's gone, one wonders if the new guy will take this team on a run and ruin that as well.
What a mess. No wonder Pat Quinn apparently wanted nothing to do with bailing water on a sinking ship.

Murray is certainly part of the problem up there.

There's no point to breaking up the big three
when Alfredsson has nobody to play with on the second line. Just a Poorly put together team.

Same as Wyshinski’s point, but yeah: I just never understood this hiring in the first place, especially when they were considering an ambitious choice like DeBoer. Instead, another (the last?) year of Spezza/Alfie/Heatley wasted.

Wyshinski’s Er, I mean “Wyshynski.” (One might think with Czech roots I could handle E. European names. But sadly, no.)

Only way I’d enjoy this more is if Bryan Murray went back behind the bench to get fired himself at the end of the year (which he probably will be regardless)

This is not a coaching problem anymore. These players are just plain lazy and uninterested. Most of these guys have been together too long and it’s time for them to try and earn a living somewhere else. They must be tired of looking at the same loosers across the room from each other every day. Murray will probably be fired by April 15th.
Fire sale from now to the trade deadline. Let’s get the rebuilding started.

Trading Spezza's contract
will be easier said than done. Trading Vermette would not be an acceptable substitution.

I’m not saying that the individuals are not good players – they are just incredibly ineffective as a team and they need to be split up. Someone will take on Spezza, contract ‘n and he will be a great asset to that team. He just can’t be a great asset here anymore.
Phillips will be a good 3-4 D on some team. Someone will like what Neil brings. They are all expendable. Every last one of them – including Alfie at this point. No more time for sentimental favorites. The players have sent the message – they don’t want to be here anymore. Why keep ’em?

Whose the next to go?
My guess is Alain Vigneualt.

I’ll vote for Craig MacTavish at this point, though it probably won’t happen until the end of the year.

I think the only way Mac T will get fired
is if Katz and Lowe think it’ll spark a fire under the team.

A new coach isn’t going to change anything. No matter who is hired, he can’t fill the 9 forward spots that are seriously underacheiving…
Its hard to believe that the Sens might be a seller at this year’s deadline— but its looking more and more like this team is simply lacking any kind of depth to make a serious run at the 8th seed….
At least Maple Leaf fans have company in their misery…
Cheers,

Shame to give up on the Tavares sweepstakes with only ten weeks to go. Hartsburg was sure looking like the right man for that job.

Failed miserably?
James – the guy had a better than .500 record in 3 of his 5 seasons including a 94-point season in Chicago. He wasn’t an elite coach in his earlier stops, but “failed miserably” is in my opinion a re-writing of what happened. If getting fired negates the possibility of a coach ever being deemed a success, then this league has had very few coaching successes.
Such a re-painting of Hartsburg’s coaching abilities also seems to ignore his work with the Greyhounds and his unparalleled success with Canada’s Under-20 program.
Was his style a good fit for this bunch of pushovers? Hell no. That doesn’t mean the man can’t coach. Would DeBoer – another “accountability” coach – really have done better?

Hartsburg’s long been known as a coach who was great with juniors and flamed out quickly in his NHL stops. Talk to any ‘Hawks or Ducks fans from his years there; they’ll tell you how they knew it simply wouldn’t work out in Ottawa.
His career coaching record is 201-208-69-13, and over seven seasons, he’s coached just 20 playoff games. If Ottawa finishes last in its division, it will be the fifth time a Hartsburg team has finished fifth in its division in seven stints in the NHL.
I don’t think he’ll get another shot at an NHL gig.

Never put anything past an NHL owner – they’ll hear a name from the past and go, “Hey, he was all right, wasn’t he?”
Don’t forget the “former players helping other former players get work” situations as well. It’s nice to get new coaching blood in the NHL, but the retreads always find a place.
I do believe you’re right about Hartsburg though, it was shocking when Ottawa started mentioning his name last year and laughable when they signed him on.
