Rangers make Renney walk the plank

Capt

This move wasn't a surprise. So much so that, last night before I hit the hay, I searched on Google to see if Tom Renney had been the victim of a late-night firing. They were that bad against Toronto last night.

Turns out they waited until the morning.

Renney's a really nice guy and a good hockey mind, but his team this season has been brutal since a great early season stretch. New York was the best team in the NHL 13 games in at 10-2-1, but has since gone 21-21-6, an 82-point pace, and have done it by the skin of their teeth. Nine of their wins this season have come in the shootout, more than any other NHL team, and without winning those coin flips, they'd be well out of playoff position right now.

And, all the while, Renney's become more and more unpopular with the team's fan base. (They're not exactly upset right now.)

That stems back to last season, when the Blueshirts were one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league, and GM Glen Sather's ugly off-season roster makeover didn't help matters much. This is a poorly constructed team playing poorly, one with more boat anchor contracts than likely any other in the NHL.

As for replacements, the three names being thrown around are John Tortorella, Jim Schoenfeld and Pat Quinn. All would wield much bigger sticks than Renney, meaning we can expect all sorts of drama in New York going forward.

The Rangers have just 21 games left in the season and are incredibly still in a playoff position, but if I had to place my bets, I'd put them outside of the postseason this year. The team's a mess and has a very difficult schedule coming up down the stretch, with four games remaining against the Flyers, two against Boston, Montreal and Carolina and individual matchups with th elikes of Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Buffalo.

They'll need to turn it around quickly to make the playoffs, and I'm not sure they've got the horses. Sather messed this roster up good.

UPDATE It's sounding more and more like Tortorella is the Rangers' man, and the players seem to feel the new coach will be introduced tomorrow. New York has a three-day break here to get ready to play the Leafs again on Wednesday.

UPDATE Newsday's Steve Zipay says Sather is working on a deal with Tortorella. He's still under contract to the Lightning, so Tampa Bay would likely have to be contacted before anything gets done.

I'm sure the OK Hockey boys will be glad to get out from under the rest of that contract.

UPDATE When TSN reports that Tortorella's the guy, and he currently works at the network as an analyst, you have to believe that's just what's happening. That was quick. (Then again, this could have been in the works for a while.)

Getting the okay from the Lightning and the league shouldn't be a problem. I imagine Tortorella returns to where he first worked as an assistant coach back in 1999-00 by tomorrow at the latest.

Larry Brooks says there'll be an announcement later today.

Whew!

And so far, none of this season’s replacements have won their first game in charge.

This is a poorly constructed team playing poorly, one with more boat anchor contracts than likely any other in the NHL.

I am absolutely relieved Sather keeps his job. Keep it up!

Surprise, surprise

Rangers and Pens fire their coaches… last offseason, both teams got simultaneously less talented and softer, while losing a lot of the veteran leadership that had sustained their teams previously.

Renney probably did the most with the least. Not many teams can lose two Hall of Famers in one year and still be in a playoff position by the end of February.

Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

Yeah, Ruff isn’t going anywhere.

There’s been fan rumblings earlier this year that his message has started to get stale, but there’s no one else available that could remotely get as much out of nothing as Ruff can.

I think that was a joke. I know the Leafs have had the Habs’ number for most of the last couple of years, despite the disparity in team quality.

It had to be a joke because the Leafs never beat the Sabres.

Rangers Fans Rejoice?

Renney sealed his fate months ago, when he passed up opportunities to make statements to his team by cutting the ice time of (or benching) his underacheiving players. Instead, he continued to reward the same underachieving players with more and more quality ice time, and penalizing the players who actually played with heart, guts, and extra effort. He was a good soldier for the Rangers coming out of the lockout, but on this current team of non-self-starters, his positive attitude and “give them time to work it out” attitude was not the right fit.

Similarly, its good that Perry Pearn was axed too. He was nominally in “charge” of the Rangers PP…which has flat out sucked for over 2 seasons.

What’s sad, however, is that the real culprit – Sather, skates away again. How many coaches is this? How many people in the league are laughing at the contracts he gave to Redden and Rosival? If Sather had any balls, he would go back behind the bench himself, and give the paying fans a chance to serenade him in person.

Until Sather goes, this team will never been anything more than a middle-of-the-road team.

Couldn't agree more...

I loved the Rangers growing up (Brian Leetch is still my favorite player of all time), but after what Sather did to this team (and Leetch in particular), I refused to cheer for them any more. My dad still follows them, but I could care less unless they are playing the Isles or Devils.

Maybe when Sather is finally gone I will start to care about them again, but right now they are well away from me caring too much.

Hopefully Don Maloney can convince Gretzky that Renney would be a big help behind the bench…

Petr Prucha won’t be playing anywhere, because he is not a good hockey player. I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not, but I probably would take Salei for him.

I have grown to hate Prucha for the way Ranger fans clamor for his return to the lineup. As if all the Rangers need is a guy who gets annihilated at least once a game and flubs setups between the faceoff dots.

Rangers, Royals, Raiders, Knicks...the man loves a winner.

by self loather on Feb 23, 2009 2:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think a lot of the blog commenters have blown Prucha into something he isn’t…But to suggest he is not a good player is also undervaluing him. He may not be a 30 goal scorer, but he plays bigger than his size. He gets in the forecheck, and wins one on one battles in the O zone. He draws penalties and brings energy to a team, no matter what the score. The Rangers could do a lot worse than having a few more Pruchas on their team.

The Rangers do not need more Saleis – 3rd or 4th defensemen whose best days, which werent so special in the first place, are long behind them.

I was kidding about Salei (I think), and I agree. I do think it’s curious that Renney really seemed to dislike Prucha, as Voros has been atrocious since his hot start, and has been getting the starts while Prucha rides the pine. But Prucha went from a great rookie season when the PP was buzzing with Jagr, Nylander, etc., to a decent second season, to a bad third season. Most fans look at that and somehow blame the coaching. I look at it and see a flash in the pan rookie whose skills are in serious decline.

I think you are both undervaluing Salei. He’s a decent defenseman here in CO.

He actually technically is a 30-goal scorer, if you look up his stats (on the page you sponsor!). That shooting percentage is ridonkulous, but there it is.

by Doogie2K on Feb 23, 2009 6:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Renney deserves criticism for a lot of things. The line juggling is my personal pet peeve, and when a team gives up this many SHG and has that many TMM penalties called against them (TWO in the same game last night!), I view that as a sign of disarray on the bench. But Larry Brooks said it well in a recent column – Renney deserves a lot of credit for bringing this team out of the dark years, and their conversion from laughingstock of the league to a legitimate contender.

In sum, a good person who represented the franchise well, who was good for young players, and successfully managed some quirky personalities for a while, but who was ultimately undone by his conservative coaching and inability to hold star players accountable for lackluster play.

That said, I’m not sure that the love child of Al Arbour and Scotty Bowman could make this team a winner. I hear that Boomer is ripping Sather on XM right now, and good for him. Sather is the reason why this team is screwed for the foreseeable future. All of you guys may want to bust out your old $tranger jokes, you’ll get some good use out of them when the Rangers miss the playoffs for the next four years.

No surprise

The only shock here is how Glen Sather has become so good at politics that he somehow has fooled Dolan into believing he knows what he is doing when he has actually wasted at least 100 million dollars in bad contracts since he was hired in 2000.

He flashed his five Stanley Cup rings from a generation ago and was good to go. Sort of like the Oilers’ hiring practices, come to think of it.

by Doogie2K on Feb 23, 2009 6:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Hall of Famer

Glen Sather was born under the right star. He comes to Edmonton a washed-up bum of a journeyman player, becomes player-coach in the final WHA season, and inherits Gretzky when Oilers owner Peter Pocklington wins Gretzky in a backgammon (or poker) game with Indianapolis Racers owner Nelson Skalbania.

A blind dead monkey could have won Stanley Cups with that Oilers lineup in the 80s. Sather whined in the 90s he didn’t have enough money and the Oilers sucked. The new owners finally gathered the sack to walk away from Sather when they got tired of a part-time GM.

Then Sather gets to NYR and spends a billion dollars and his teams still suck. Apparently, it’s the coach’s fault Slats over-spent no secondary players.

Like the Bruins with Harry Sinden and the Blackhawks with Bob Pulford, the Rangers will continue to blow as long as they’ve got one of the Old Boys in charge.

by Dr Van Nostrum on Feb 23, 2009 2:00 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The only good...

The only good thing to come out of this is a real big shakeup and possibly a new system that focuses more on the Rangers offensive power than their above-average defense. Staal, Girardi, Mara, and Reitz (in that order) are the only defense the Rangers have who are of any worth to me. The system is what allowed the Rangers to play such good defense, and that special someone between the pipes.

The Rangers can play great hockey if they open things up and get the young guys wheeling the puck around. Take chances, because right now even if they play .500 hockey they can still make the playoffs. Let’s hope (as a Ranger fan) they get on a roll…

Also, Sather is the true problem, as many have already pointed out. And I highly recommend the Glen Sather. Hockey Genius. site for a good laugh.

If Tortorella is indeed the new man in MSG, we’re going to see some drama unless certain players step up. As he isn’t afraid to single out players he’s not going to put up with how guys like Redden, Roszival and Gomez play with those contracts. That said, it could be suicidal for his career to take over a team that’s structured so badly when he has Tampa’s last season weighing upon himself as well. I’m not sure if I expect improvement from the Rangers as they can’t get out from those player contracts, but at least the complacency will be over.

One thing that could turn the Rangers’ season around is the firing of Pearn. If they get someone good to run the PP and Tortorella won’t tolerate going back to their bad habits, that could lead to more wins. Also, possibly having more accountability when it comes to stupid defensive errors (such as junior-level coverage problems during otherwise strong defensive games) helps.

Renney did a great job turning the franchise around. This year, however, the same weaknesses have been costing them every night despite strong play in other areas. For some reason he didn’t do a good job correcting the problem areas, and even when he tried (too late into the season) the team seemed out of synch. Unlike many fired coaches, I don’t think he lost the room at any point, but along with the overpaid underachievers, being unable to do anything to fix problems is what cost him his job.

Don’t forget Naslund. Not so much the weight of his contract but his play and TOI.

Good point, there are others that might get into trouble with the coach and get their TOI cut, and Naslund is a prime example. In fact, most established NYR players have underachieved at some point this year. The guys I chose to mention are the guys that the Rangers absolutely NEED to turn it around if the franchise doesn’t want to be screwed for years as all of those have 3-5 contract years remaining after this one.

Sather’s done a horrible decisions when it comes to expensive long-term deals as Lundqvist is the only 3+ season guy who’s playing well. Drury individually doesn’t really worry me as he’d probably do okay if their offensive game was better overall and he’s more of a support guy offensively anyway, but in that organization’s context they couldn’t afford to pay him like that. Imagine if the cap were at 50 million two years from now: they’d be paying those five guys two thirds of their cap space while getting unacceptable contributions from three or four of them.

Torterella worked as an assistant coach a lot earlier than that: here’s an interview from when he was an assistant in Buffalo in 1991-92. Unless you just meant “first worked” in the sense of, “first worked in New York.”

Not to mention he’s fairly hard on goaltenders when they have poor games.

by James Mirtle on Feb 23, 2009 7:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Granted, you can’t know for sure when it’s Tortorella we’re talking about, but I don’t see that being a problem with Lundqvist. Aside from Khabibulin he had some of the more ridiculous starters we’ve seen in recent years so it’s no wonder he wasn’t happy. That said, he’s fairly hard on all players when they have poor games.

by Malurous on Feb 23, 2009 8:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He’s got to watch himself – Lundqvist is the only consistent performer in New York and he’s been cursed with a team that refuses to score goals and requires him to keep opposing teams to one goal or less each night. That’s an awful burden to have knowing that you can’t even get away with a slightly marginal night now and again.

Thankfully for Henrik, he’s got a journeyman as a backup and two mediocre goalies in the AHL as solutions…not that he’s ever been in danger nor should he ever be in danger of losing his job.

Here’s where the real danger comes in if you’re a Rangers fan, and proof that Slats should’ve been the guy to leave. How would you like to be John Tortorella and have your GM say this:

“I think over time [Tortorella will] learn to love him just like I have,” Sather said on a conference call.

Nevermind what Torts has said repeatedly in the past about Avery, Slats seems to forget that Avery is still a Dallas Star until they decide to recall him…which I have to think might be coming sooner than later.

by HockeyJoe on Feb 24, 2009 2:31 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Scotty

I don’t disagree, but I think the Rangers are better off on the offensive end of the puck than the defensive end. I think Renney’s defensive system was holding back the offense a lot. When the team opens up and plays a free flowing game they are fast and fun to watch.

Take your chances on D but open up the system ASAP in my opinion.

As I was going back and forth with a friend last night – while there should be more puck pressure down in the opposition end of the ice, the puck has to get there and Torts will probably have them try to move it quickly up through the neutral zone. The problem there is that the big puck movers – Gomez, Zherdev, Redden and Rozsival – are all prone to terrible turnovers … leading to a shell-shocked Henrik.
