Avery clears waivers

Savery_medium

To the surprise of no one, Sean Avery cleared waivers at noon today.

The question now is 'what next?'

Avery can be placed on re-entry waivers (meaning teams will be on the hook for half his salary) as soon as tomorrow and have a new team as early as Wednesday. Another option would see the Stars simply place him in the AHL for a while, but it stands to reason that any team taking him on in that role would be looking at him for their parent club.

The Rangers are currently in 10th place in the standings, meaning 20 other teams will have a shot at a half-price Avery before they do, and his agent Pat Morris said on Toronto radio today that there are more teams interested in him. (He said he had talked to four about Avery.)

Don't underestimate how desperate some of the bubble teams are, either. Avery may be signed for three more years after this, but his $1.9-million cap hit going forward is less than the average player salary and easily stashable on the fourth line or in the minors.

The Habs should pick him, maybe he could spark those hapless and heartless Habs!

I sure hope you’re not a Habs fan…

He's a forward

so clearly Tampa would claim him.

In all seriousness, I wonder who those four teams are. And would one of them pick him up to trade him to NYR?

James, can a team pluck him then trade him before the deadline if they want? Could see a team like the NYI try to land Avery if for no other reason than to stick it to their ‘friends’ to the west, and possibly get a nice asset in return for Avery before the deadline

Shoud have said pluck him upon ‘re-entry waivers’

How about Calgary picking him up? ; )

As a Rangers fan

I would welcome him back…on-ice, he was nothing but positive. Off-ice, who knows. And if he comes in and lights a fire under some of the complacent Rangers [Hi Scotty! Hi Wade!] it would be a good thing.

Wade Redden is fireproof. He is completely unaffected by it.

Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.
