Lindros's Letter
There's some troubling stuff in there, and to me it sounds like Eric Lindros raised some legitimate concerns in the ombudsman role. If not, it's time to hear about it. NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly is going to have to do better than say "there are no complaints" to make this one go away.

Yikes
Obviously a lot more going on at the union than we were aware of.
I’m certain we could get a much more accurate read on the situation if we simply tapped into their internal emails.
Too soon?

I can’t get that Kelly “there are no complaints” quote out of my head. I thought Kelly had done many things right since taking over, but that kind of Bettman-esque “sky is always clear” thinking is such a red flag. I don’t care if you’re Gandhi, it’s just poor policy to pretend you never need oversight or a devil’s advocate — particularly given that union’s history.

It's too bad that it's Lindros who held the position
because he’s extremely unpopular among fans and people dismiss him as being a cry baby whenever he raises concerns. If it were someone like Yzerman or Messier, people would be listening. If the NHLPA doesn’t have Ombudsman in the future because Lindros gave Kelly a perfect excuse to abolish that position, the NHLPA may very well have problems down the road with the executive director being too powerful and not adhering to rules, just like before. The main culprit, however, is player indifference. The intention was good to have an ombudsman, who doesn’t report to the director, to handle disputes with the executive director. But if players are not serious about listening to the ombudsman (or at least acknowledge the work done by him), then nobody wants to hold that position and the director can become a dictator, as the player reps themselves don’t have the time to monitor the director’s work.
