"The New York Rangers have been awarded a compensatory draft pick in the wake of Alexei Cherepanov's death in October. The draft pick, the 17th in the second round of the 2009 Entry Draft, was awarded at this week's General Manager's meetings in Naples, Fla."

Who will miss out on a pick?

Don't be afraid to take a few steps back, but you better keep moving forward.

No one. There will be an extra pick in this year’s draft… this means that the 2nd round will have 31 picks and every other round will have 30.

Just a business

Surprise the Rangers don’t take out life insurance on their players
and pocket the money upon death like Walmart does.

Did I just compare the Rangers to Walmart, yes I did.

What if....

A team drafted a guy, signed him to a deal, and then the guy turns out to be a real bonehead, like a T.O type, and the team wanted to get rid of him. Could they just have him whacked and get a new pick in the next draft?

After the conspiracy/murder charges, they would still not get a compensation pick since they signed the prospect. This compensation is simply for first round draft picks who are not be signed by the team that drafted them.

Even I have to say this is sleazy. The only justification I can think of is that Cherry got through NHL physicals to be drafted even though he had a heart defect. They caught David Carle’s, but let Cherry though … ?

And if it is just a death rule, does this mean Vancouver can get a pick retroactively because of Luc Bourdon?

No. Bourdon was signed to a contract. The compensatory pick is for unsigned first-round picks. It applies to more than injured players, too, extending to those who are injured, ill or simply unwilling to sign.

by James Mirtle on Mar 12, 2009 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep. Based on the logic of the rule, this is actually a very acceptable provision for it. I mean, Minnesota got a compensation pick for A.J. Thelen, who was just a plain awful draft pick. Thelen didn’t even sign a contract with ANY NHL team upon becoming an unrestricted free agent. I see absolutely no problem with the Rangers receiving a pick in this instance.

Doesn’t/shouldn’t Phoenix be receiving a similiar pick then, for being unable to sign Blake Wheeler?

by Hooks Orpik on Mar 12, 2009 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unless I’m mistook, they did, last year.

by RyanV on Mar 12, 2009 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No he didn’t. He declined to sign with Phoenix (who drafted him), became a free agent, and then signed with Boston.

You are correct.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

Oh gotcha, good call andrew. I was trying to remember exactly how that situation played out again.

antropov

So this replaces the second round pick the Rangers gave up to Tor for renting Antropov?

by engineer on Mar 12, 2009 1:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

No, it’s an additional pick altogether. There will be 31 selections in the second round of the upcoming draft.

From what I read somewhere...

the GMs and NHLPA agreed to this as one-time extraordinary event. Which I think is fair.

But Sather could argue for all the 2nd round draft picks in the world, and it probably wouldnt amount to much. People make a big deal of 2nd rounders…but I thnk the overall success rate is still pretty low. Sather’s 2nd round picks have generally tended toward failure, with a few notable exceptions – Dubinsky and Tyutin.

2007- Antoine Lafleur (Goaltender). Playing in QMJHL…not sure where he ranks on Rangers prospect list.

2006- Artem Anisimov (Centre) – 2nd in scoring in Hartford [AHL] – considered a top NYR prospect.

2005 – Michael Sauer (Defence) – also in Hartford – considering a mid-level NYR prospect.

2005 – Marc Andre Cliche – traded to LA as part of Avery deal. Think he’s still in AHL minors.

2004 – Darin Oliver, Dane Byers, Bruce Graham, Brandon Dubinsky. Dubinsky is his best ever NYR 2nd round pick. Byers has been the guy who is on the bubble of training camp the last few years.

2003 – This is the year that will live in Sather’s infamy forever. The Hugh Jessiman draft. Dustin Brown…Ryan Getzlaf, Zach Parise, Ryan Kesler, Mike Richards, Corey Perry. All bypassed in the first round. Not to mention the people who went early in Round 2 – Patrice Bergeron, Shea Weber, Matt Carle. UGH.Sather took Ivan Baranka, who was considered a good prospect…but he couldnt break into the NHL lineup and is playing in the KHL now.

2002 – Took Lee Falardeau with 33rd pick (the NYR’s first pick in the entire draft). Has been playing with the Rangers ECHL affiliate for last few years.

2001 – Fedor Tyutin. Tyutin was a solid mid-level D for the Rangers, and ultimately was the bait that Columbus wanted for Zherdev. From what I understand, he’s one of Columbus’ top D.

2000 – Filip Novak. Again considered a strong prospect who was ultimately dealt to Florida for Pavel Bure. Got injured, lost a whole year, and bounced around a few teams before going back to the Czech league.

Compensatory Pick

Can the Canucks get a pick for the unfortunate death of Luc Bourdon?

This has already been asked and addressed.

Here's what I don't understand about it...

By reading the CBA, it’s the right thing to do to give them the comp pick…at the very least, the spirit of the rule is followed. So all that’s cool..but technically, shouldn’t the pick be allotted to them the year after the deadline would have been to sign him?

That seems to be how it works for all the other situations. As a 2008 pick, wouldn’t they have had until the spring of 2010 to sign him? So what I don’t understand is why an exception to that rule was made to give them the comp pick THIS year instead of in 2010 or 2011?
