The Rod Langway Award leaders
It's been nearly two months since I took at look at the top defensive defencemen, so it's high time for another run through. Big assist to Behind The Net for the data.

Seabrook, Martin and Keith are all incredibly close by these numbers, so it's anyone's guess who'll win my fictitious trophy this time around.
It's tougher to get on this list if you play for a team that struggles with its goals against, but a few guys have managed. Gervais plays for the god awful Islanders and against tough opposition, while Detroit, Pittsburgh and Calgary are all 20th or worse in goals against and have Lidstrom, (Reliable) Rob Scuderi and Regehr represented here.
As per usual, all of the players listed here have to play a regular role on the penalty kill, have to have played at least 45 games and about 15 minutes a game at even strength.
Players who didn't do so well in this metric (among those who qualified) include Lilja, Staios, Gauthier, Brad Stuart, Enstrom, Havelid, Phaneuf, Jason Smith and Finger.
Oh, and from the looks of just the numbers, Green should win the Norris. He's on pace for a whale of a season.

Nice to see some love for "all around" D-men
For what it’s worth, I think Paul Martin might be the most underrated player in the game. You never hear a thing about the guy…but he’s extremely solid defensively, and not half-bad in transition either.
For all the joke, bad contracts handed out to d-men he’s quite a bargain. Teams like the Flyers and Rangers are seemingly stuck with lesser players like Timonen (good player, horrible contract) and Redden (average player, horrible contract) forever, but the Devils have the chance to extend a guy like Martin for a very reasonable price given the economy.

I love Paul Martin. He was amazing as a Gopher. Leopold was better, but Martin displayed an ability to stay cool that I’ve rarely seen matched. He blocked a shot in the crease in the 2003 semi-final against Michigan that I was sure was going in. It was big, since Minnesota won that game in overtime.
That he has turned into one of the best defensive defensemen in the league doesn’t surprise me.

Keith/Seabrook
That pairing should be a lock for the Olympic team.

James, just out of curiosity, how does Markov fits on there? Does he ‘qualify’ for your metric?
by Habs on Mar 13, 2009 7:38 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He definitely qualifies, as he plays a lot on the PK. I’m not sure exactly where he fits in, but if you look up the individual metrics, it gives you a good idea.

How is this sorted?

I was wondering the same thing.

Iirc. James has a weighting system for the various stats.
by rsm on Mar 13, 2009 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I just rank the qualified players in each category and weight the stats fairly evenly. It’s definitely not rocket science.

Wow, Marc Staal has really fallen from the list from those two months. I wonder if fatigue is a problem for Marc and if Derek Morris will help remedy the heavy minutes Marc has been playing virtually all season for the Rangers.

James first time have seen this. Have posted numbers on HF boards and Lowetideon this kind of thing.
But you ignore one element. The RTSS stat. The physical element. Guys who can hit and block shots. You know the things Languay did.
I have a criteria that requires guys to be Physical while not giving up goals.
Must face:
14:00 EVTOI;
2:30 PKTOI;
ToP 70 (Hits+Blocks)/GM;
Top 70 EV GA/GM
Top 70 PK GA/GM
I choose the top 70 as a first pairing barrier.
There are only 8 in the league who cover the complete bet.
Volchenkov OTT
Zanon NSH
White NJ
Schultz MIN
Seabrook CHI
Hedja CLB
Chara BOS
Ward BOS
All the guys not on the list are Languay chump change.

Preventing goals is preventing goals. Whether you do it by playing “physical style” or any other way, what matters in the end is the effect on the scoreboard.

I agree with this completely. Being physical is an important part of hockey, but it doesn’t make you or break you as a strong defender.

Any defensive metric that discounts Lidstrom because he doesn’t hit is bogus, I’m afraid.
by James Mirtle on Mar 13, 2009 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Basically this. As much as I’d love to say that Colin White is one of the top 8 defensemen in the league, Lidstrom is pretty much the definition of a commanding defenseman.

James: Lidstrom would qualify if his cross checks on the shoulders and waist during the cycle qualified as hits. The Norris label allows for freedom the others on the list are not f requently provided.
If you question this statement you do not watch the detroit games.
I know you do.

Though Lidstrom does affect the logic of the stats.
Ask me if hedja is afforded the same stick opportunities as Lidstrom.
Say Yes with a Straight face.

Someone’s got a grudge against Lidstrom…..
Shut up when you're talking to me!

Just a thought, maybe Hejda doesn’t get the same opportunities as Lidstrom because the latter is far better than Hejda?

Karlis Skrastins
This guy is a GREAT D-Man. Shot blocking specialist…
Is he viewed as anything relevant outside of with Panthers fans?

Man
I love statistical analysis to death, and I love using statistics to disprove what people say they “see with their own eyes”, but I don’t love it when James uses them to prove to me that Rob Scuderi does not, contrary to what my eyes think, suck!

Bruno Gervais
Great to see Bruno getting some credit here, as he really has picked up his defensive game. Pairing him with Mark Streit has certainly helped him in many ways.
Lets go Islanders...
