This isn't going to end well
Something about this blog looks a little familiar. Not sure what.

I don't understand...
What’s familiar about it, and why will it not end well?

Hmm… is it simply that this new site is called ‘pensblog.com’ when the already well-established ‘thepensblog.com’ exists?
shrug Not much to worry about. A name is a name. Content is what matters.

Little known fact: I own zepensblog.com for a future French version…I just gotta ask Max Talbot how you say “stunned” en français.

If it ends with a couple of Pens fans killing each other I think we can call it a wash.
by twoeightnine on Mar 24, 2009 11:14 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Just say “Ovechkin” and they’ll start killing each other to try and prove Malkin/Crosby are better. Not hard.
Shut up when you're talking to me!

no big deal
Thought I’d add my $.02 – we aren’t trying to compete with the pens blog – in fact we like their stuff when it comes to the photo-shopping of images. When Therrien got axed and they had all those images of him in various shots, that was great.
We aren’t taking that route, instead, we are looking to provide opinions based in fact – so instead of saying “Philly sucks” we will post stats, trends and real data to back it up.
so, we feel like we’re adding another wrinkle to the Pens fan base as another resource to get more information about our favorite team.
feel free to flame/insult/post at our site.

Name
Seems like you could have put a little creativity into the name and not used the exact same name as one of the most popular hockey team-blogs on the interwebs. Even if it was just “Penguin Blog”.
by Jibblescribbits on Mar 24, 2009 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Uhhh
Saying that Samuelsson’s hit on Neely was just a regular hit is providing opinions in fact?
Nice work trying to piggyback off one of the most popular hockey blogs.

You’re not helping anything by linking to them. If the only noteworthy thing they’ve done is “borrow” an name, I’m not sure they deserve much press.
by detroitnick on Mar 24, 2009 11:29 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think if all they’ve done is borrow a name that my linking to them is going to lead to any success.
I thought this new site was noteworthy. I bet others agree.

seems kind of lame, dude
competing or not, of all the names in the world you could come up with, dropping the “the” on an established blog was the best you could come up with?

That would be a good way to parody thepensblog. Leave out all the photoshops, swearing, dirty jokes and play it straight? :P

we originally had another domain name registered and live site on it – and while that site was everything hockey, for the most part, all that ended up getting any traction was info on the Pens, and that is our hometown and favorite team. Then by chance, I saw that pensblog.com was for sale so I bought it.
C’est la vie

You state that you’re “not trying to compete with the pens blog” because you’re “looking to provide opinions based in fact – so instead of saying ‘Philly sucks’ we will post stats, trends and real data to back it up.” Last I checked, tPB does insert – between the jokes and photoshops – some factual content. Frankly, many of the cbloggers (Stoosh comes to mind) regularly contribute stats-based analysis that rivals the sort of things you see here from Professor Mirtle or other guys like J.P.
This also isn’t “another wrinkle” to the Penguins blogging universe. Ever hit up Seth at Empty Netters? How about The Confluence? There are already blogs in the niche of what you would consider “fact-based” opinion. And there are plenty that post YouTubes of Penguins-related stuff.
Look, tPB staff wasn’t bright enough to buy “pensblog.com” and redirect it to tPB. Their bad. But don’t act as though you’re somehow clean-handed here.
I know one thing—tPB is the last bunch of guys I’d want to give a reason to job me. Good luck.

Actually, I know of some “anonymous” people that would one-up anything the Pensblog guys would do…..
But point taken and agreed.

“I know one thing—tPB is the last bunch of guys I’d want to give a reason to job me. Good luck.”
Let them do what they want. That’s the great thing about the web. I wish them well in whatever they do with their site.
Like most things on the web, only quality posts over time will change the opinions of people, and despite all of that, some people won’t change their minds out of spite.
Good day

Is there some story behind this? Anywhere that I could read about it? I’m just curious what you’re all alluding to.
