Avery: Born to be a Ranger?
First off, here's Sean Avery's work from last night in yet another win for the Rangers:
He also assisted on Scott Gomez's game winner while playing about 17 minutes, including 2:30 on the power play. And since Avery rejoined the Blueshirts, they've been resurrected, going 7-3-0.
Sound familiar?
For whatever reason, New York is never as good when Avery's out of the lineup, and the same is true of Avery's play with the Rangers and elsewhere. Here's a comparison of his career stats in both situations:
| Totals | GP | G | A | Pts | +/- | PIM | SOG | SPCT | PPG | PPA | GWG |
| Elsewhere | 316 | 45 | 79 | 124 | -3 | 932 | 612 | 7.4% | 2 | 18 | 8 |
| Rangers | 96 | 27 | 34 | 61 | 18 | 227 | 243 | 11.1% | 5 | 7 | 4 |
| Per game | G/G | A/G | Pts/G | PIM | S/G | ATOI | |||||
| Elsewhere | 0.14 | 0.25 | 0.39 | 2.95 | 1.94 | 11.41 | |||||
| Rangers | 0.28 | 0.35 | 0.64 | 2.36 | 2.53 | 16.52 |
Fewer penalties taken, double the goals per game and a whole lot more ice time.
Even so, it's worth noting that Avery's still just a 50-point player as a Ranger, which is why it's so baffling that he's had such a major impact on New York's record the past three years.
| Without Avery | ||||||

| 2006-07 | 29 | 17 | 6 | 6 | 40 | 113 |
| Totals | 96 | 57 | 23 | 16 | 130 | 111 |
Now, I know this topic has been done to death, but it's interesting to lay it out in numbers, especially since it's continuing to hold true again this season.

From an NYR fan...
He’s clearly a fan favorite and when he is going the crowd is going and that always helps. At the same time it seems like he has free reign to do what he pleases in a blueshirt uniform, and maybe that helps.
God forbid NYR wins a cup with him putting up huge numbers, the Rangers might have to retire his jersey with the pace as of late.

This is all Billy Beane’s fault.

Plus the access to the fashion magazines; could this be the “happiness bump” that spurs him to greatness whenever he is in NYC?

Couple other possible things...
- When he came over the first time, apparently he really looked up to Shanahan, and learned a lot from being around him every day.
- He had success early, and success breeds confidence. He went to Dallas, the team stunk early (thanks for nothing Marty Turco?) and it all went sour. If he had gotten the ice time and PP time with Dallas and gotten a few breaks? Who knows where he’d be now.

oh...
and it could very well be that he realizes that he doesn’t have a lot of chances left, so he better do everything he can to make it work with the NYR this time around. Let’s see where his stats are after 82 games, and if he’s still putting up these numbers.
As for his impact on the team – let’s not forget that the NYR also picked up Morris, Antropov and Tortorenola at the deadline too – and both Antropov and Morris have played better for the NYR than then people they replaced.

Good points. Morris was a great pickup for them, actually.

Adding Morris is great almost entirely because it resulted in dumping Kalinin,

I agree. Certainly, Avery is a good player for the Rangers, but their upswing also has occured at the same time as the arrival of the guy that’s probably been their best blueliner the past couple of weeks, and a good top 6 forward that has gotten Chris Drury to wake up.
Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

Drury woke up? When did that happen? He only plays his best against the Islanders …

Is there any more perfect a hockey name than "Cal Clutterbuck?"
He may yet pass Uwe Krupp.

I always pictured Zarley Zalapski winding up for a Slapski…

Clutterbuck
Such a lovable/hatable player (depending on one’s allegiance). The name is perfect for his role.
