Connolly signs two-year extension

I'm surprised to see the oft-injured Tim Connolly get a $9-million contract, but that's what's just been announced by both TSN and Sportsnet. He will make $4.5-million per season through 2010-11.
As always, health is the major issue here. Connolly's played just 79 regular season games since the end of the 2006 playoffs, missing all but two games in 2006-07, playing in 48 last season and just 29 this year. He's been excellent when healthy, putting up nearly a point a game since the lockout, but he's likely one major injury away from having to retire.
That said, he's only 27 years old and has looked good lately playing on a whole bunch of different lines (most recently with Jochen Hecht and Drew Stafford). I wonder how insurable his contract is given how often he's been hurt the past few years.

Way overpaid given his injury history even though he’s great when healthy. It’s strange, especially with some holes to fill in the summer (Spacek, Kotalik and Numminen are UFAs, right?). Of course, if they got a good insurance and aren’t going to spend to the cap anyway it’s ok – they can just count this as 2.25 million in their own budget because he’s going to miss half the season anyway.

I’m glad he is resigned, but we all pretty much assumed that it would be for less money, not more.
Still If he stays healthy, he is worth the price…

Even if he stays healthy, you can’t say he’s worth 4.5 mil. Since joining the Sabres, he’s doing about 0.66 pts/game, and given his injury history, the Sabres had absolutely no reason to give Connolly the hookup, and had plenty of leverage to try to bend him over the barrel. You can’t give up that kind of leverage and negotiating power in a capped economy.
