Gerber, Morrison claimed on waivers

The waiver deadline was at noon today and four players have been claimed:

  • Toronto claimed Martin Gerber and Erik Reitz
  • Dallas claimed Brendan Morrison
  • Pittsburgh claimed Craig Adams

Everyone else on this list has cleared waivers. No one took Miroslav Satan or Gary Roberts.

Everyone's down on Gerber at the moment, but his numbers have been better than Vesa Toskala's and he gives the Leafs a chance to allow Justin Pogge to keep playing in the AHL.

The Stars, meanwhile, need someone to fill in at centre while Brad Richards recovers from a broken wrist, and Morrison fits the bill. He's really struggled coming off of major knee surgery in the summer, however.

UPDATE The Maple Leafs have announced that Vesa Toskala's season is over as he will undergo hip surgery in the near future. Gerber is sure to get lots of starts.

Gerbs

Cripes, after all the spotty play he’s had since Carolina, I’m surprised an NHL team is actually going to pick Gerber up. Is this seriously what Toronto needs right now. Toskala has already been one of the worst goalies in the league this year, I don’t see what adding Gerbs to that tandem of suck is going to improve. Can’t believe that guys has a Cup ring.

His first-born belongs to Ward for that ring.

Toskala, Joseph, Pogge, Gerber as a goaltending stable makes me cringe. At some point, don’t you just go down to a local beer league and grab a goalie from there instead? I mean, it’d be great PR, and it would give you goaltending of the same quality.

I’m gonna go see if I can get Toskala to play in my rec league. It’s about the only place he belongs, anymore.

You have to think Vesa is about to go under the knife with this move.

Anyways, I can’t take credit for this one, but… having Brendan Morrison and Brenden Morrow on the same team is going to really screw up Bob Cole.

Hockey blogging can't get any flatter.

Seeing the update, seems like Gerber’s getting one last chance to prove he belongs. He’s not going to get a good contract anyway, but shining in Toronto might land him some backup deal.
