Recchi dealt to the Bruins

Scj06_23c_medium

The Lightning have just moved Mark Recchi and a 2010 second-round pick to Boston for prospects Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums.

Recchi's 41 years old but has been through this drill before. He was dealt to the Hurricanes in 2006 at the deadline and helped them win a Stanley Cup, and will be overjoyed to be going to a contender once again this season.

On a team as deep as the Bruins, he'll likely only have to play a depth role and get some time on the power play. This should be a good fit provided they don't ask him to do too much.

Lashoff's regarded as one of the organization's top prospects, but Boston's in a win-now state of mind and has a few solid young defencemen in the system. He'll likely play in Tampa Bay in the future, and could eventually be a top four blueliner.

Karsums, meanwhile, has made excellent strides in the AHL and has been producing about a point a game with Providence.

In all, a very good return for the Lightning, who need to add young players and were set to lose Recchi for nothing anyway.

"The acquisitions of Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums today help the Tampa Bay Lightning as we look to build a younger, more aggressive team," said GM Brian Lawton upon announcing the trade. "We believe both players are NHL-ready; Matt is an offensive defenceman who skates very well and Martins is a smart, reliable, hard worker who gives us some depth at the forward position.

"We’d like to thank Mark Recchi for his hard work and service to the Tampa Bay Lightning. We’re happy that we can position him to make another run at a Stanley Cup. At the same time, Lightning fans should be comfortable in knowing this trade helps make us a better team as we focus on the future."

Holy WOW! Wasn’t expecting this one. Not much you can even say really. Recchi is a proven scoring threat and he has a wealth of playoff experience. Where can it go wrong?

Well, he’s had his problematic times in recent years. But I pretty much agree and I love the Cup rings. Will have to wait and see with the return though. So, where does he plug into? Bergeron’s line?

Ok, Recchi and a 2010 second-round pick to Boston, Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums to the Lightning. I’m OK with losing Lashoff as he’s dropped behind a couple of guys on the depth chart, but I don’t like losing Karsums. Still, I guess you have to give up something and the pick is a nice bonus.

Yea you know I feel the same about Karsums. I guess it had to be done though. Let’s just hope Recchi will put his game face on the next few months!

And yea I can only imagine he’ll play on Bergie’s line. Even though I’m sure he’d benefit just as much, goal-wise from some Savard passing.

Did the Lightning just do a trade that might benefit their organization? Mark your calendars!

Anyone benefits from Savard’s passing, but I’d like to think that Savard’s and Krejci’s lines are pretty much set in stone. And I believe he will put his game face on, his playoff performances haven’t been too shabby.

I really like it that PC’s been able to improve the roster without giving up anything irreplacable.

Oh one more thing, looking at the line combinations I like this even more. Smart moves improve more than one position by bumping other players down to roles they are better suited for and I have to think that a fourth line with Axelsson and Yelle would be one heck of a defensive unit.

You knew someone was going to bite after that 5 point performance in Calgary last week.
