Penguins acquire Guerin from Isles
Given they needed a big winger, I'd thought Pittsburgh would pursue Nik Antropov, but Bill Guerin makes some sense. He waived his no-trade clause to join the Penguins, where he'll likely play with Sidney Crosby and is a marginal upgrade over Miroslav Satan.
The Penguins have not given up a lot here. It's a conditional pick, beginning at a fifth-round pick and rising to as much as a third-rounder based on how far Pittsburgh goes in the postseason.
At that price, why not make this deal? Given they now have Sergei Gonchar back from injury, this is a much more difficult team to play than their record indicates. Don't think any of the top clubs in the East are hoping to face the Penguins in Round 1.
UPDATE How can we tell the market's down this year? Check out what the Sharks dealt for Guerin two years ago at the deadline:
Traded by the Blues to the Sharks in exchange for Ville Nieminen, Jay Barriball and New Jersey's 2007 1st round draft choice (David Perron).
Perron's proof that a late first-rounder is definitely worth something. At least far more than what the Islanders got here.

lol @ penguins
Wonder what they traded to try and get into the 8 or 7 spot and get a first round boot.

I am ready to be disappointed.

I’m already slightly disappointed…

A conditional pick?
Wow

Now I’m not disappointed at all. It’s a win-win for the Pens.

Yeah, pretty much. He’s the kind of X-ingredient that is worth a shot at that price.

They’d better not have given up much as they already need more organizational depth to survive in a cap world (young cheap quality players to fill roster spots).

Ray Shero cracks me up.
I’m predicting Malkin for Guerin. Malkin is useless if he can’t play on Crosby’s wing, so you might as well ship his useless ass out for a real quality winger like Guerin.
More seriously, given their long term highly expensive commitments to stars and more questionable players, the Pens are in a position to RELY on bringing up young cheap guys, on a yearly basis, and getting surprisingly good production/dollar from them. To give up anything at all for Guerin is a mistake.

What’s that smell? Yeah that’s Ray Shero behind starting to burn… How long can he save his job with dubious trades?
by Habs on Mar 4, 2009 1:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Hmmm ok so that trade is not so dubious, because Shero’s not giving a whole lot for Guerin.
That brings the next question: was no one really willing to pay more than a conditional 5th round pick for Bill Guerin? Quite a drop from 2 years ago…

All the build up – for what?
It’s kind of funny, still we get something for Guerin who at this point is likely not going to return.

I’m surprised too, but maybe it has to do with his playoff performances (being bad) or, more specifically, his previous playoff rental performance (being hideous)? Of course, everybody knew he wasn’t going to fetch a king’s ransom as he’s certainly slowed down, and perhaps that history explains how low the return became.

Oh, that should have said “being bad except when he won the Cup on the ’95 Devils team”. If memory serves right, he was quite good then. Well, that’s not recent, anyway.

Yeah, his goal output is also quite a drop from the last time around.

NHL Live says Gaborik is actively being shopped in the final hour. Good time for Min to get something, maybe grab an opposing GM by the balls as the clock ticks.
Pitt is a somewhat dangerous team, but frankly, Fleury doesn’t strike fear into the hearts of anyone. I think Boston, NJ, and maybe Washington could pretty well handle the Penguins in a first round matchup. Pitt’s only hope is to get up to #5, and match up against Philadelphia.

The way NHL Live is talking about it, it’s a 5th, and if the Pens pull off a first round upset, its a 3rd. That upgrade to a third makes it a bad-ish trade, imo, as there is no way this team is making a deep playoff run this year. Maybe one series win, not more than that. Given the Penguins retarded-ass salary structure, they’re going to need every draft pick they can get to try and stock their team with good cheap talent.

The Pens have an extra Third round pick this year, so it’s not so bad.

Here is to hoping you make it past round one!
::cheers::
