The big one: A four-team deal
Apparently Buffalo, Carolina, Edmonton and Los Angeles have swung a major, four-team deal that involves Patrick O'Sullivan, Justin Williams, Erik Cole, and Ales Kotalik.
This one's complicated, as you can imagine, but O'Sullivan and Kotalik are going to Edmonton, Cole back to Carolina. There are draft picks involved, too.
UPDATE Buffalo receives a second-round pick (from the Oilers) and the Kings get Williams.
UPDATE My mistake, this looks like a three-team deal with the Kotalik one between Edmonton and Buffalo thrown in afterwards (unless the second-rounder comes from one of the other teams here):
Buffalo trades Ales Kotalik for a second-round pick |
Carolina gets Erik Cole for Justin Williams |
Edmonton gets Patrick O'Sullivan and Ales Kotalik for Erik Cole |
Los Angeles gets Justin Williams for Patrick O'Sullivan and a second-round pick
|
UPDATE I like what the Oilers have done here. O'Sullivan and Kotalik are both underrated players, and Cole was heavily rumoured to be on the way out anyway. It's a poor trade for the Kings, getting an injury-battered Justin Williams who has really struggled to produce this season and having to also throw in a second-round pick.
He was a phenomenal talent previously but has missed a lot of games lately and this season just hasn't looked right. I'm a big fan of O'Sullivan, and I still think that, at some point, he'll be a top line talent in the NHL.

Kings Side
I would have thought they could have had more of a return for O’Sullivan.
Sabres replace the pick they traded for Moore. Oilers and canes get some help up front.
Still think Williams is not enough of a return for the Kings.

looks like a definite upgrade for the forward ranks on Edmonton, if that’s all that changed hands…

I think Lombardi is a pretty good GM, but who was holding the gun to his head on a trade like this? As far as I’m concerned, its a flat-out stupid trade, unless there is plenty of additional stuff going to LA that has yet to be revealed.

TSN just posted that Carolina also got a 2nd round pick out of LA. Maybe the Kings found a miracle way to keep Williams healthy? Or more likely there are more details to come out…

Should be, because O’Sullivan and a 2nd for Williams would be a horrible move.

Lombardi looks like the loser here. Can’t believe he couldn’t get more for Sully.
Also, Buffalo has essentially traded Ales Kotalik for Dominic Moore. Is that really an upgrade?
Edmonton appears ahead on this trade, especially considering Cole really wasn’t working out for them.

Is that really an upgrade
More like the Sabres had a few too many wingers and they traded one to get a body down the middle.
Shut up when you're talking to me!

Good point, had not considered the positions. Was Kotalik a UFA this summer?

Yep, he is.

either way, edmonton ends up replacing cole with kotalik and o’sullivan, so one expiring contract for another plus a talented 24 year old who was pretty solid in LA.
i’d call that a win.

For Edmonton it’s most definitely a win. Might even be called a steal, depending on how O’Sullivan continues to progress.

agreed on the positional need for the Sabres – aside from that Moore has simply been the better offensive player at even strength, a situation at which the Sabres have failed this year.
Even strength points- Moore 31, Kotalik 14.
Add in Moore’s faceoff percentage which is 13th in the NHL and this shapes up to be a solid move for Buffalo.

Kotalik’s only redeeming point this year was his backhand in the shootout. At this point in the year that’s not something that you want to keep some for.

Hope O'Sullivan Hooks Up
With the Oilers in time for tomorrow’s game. Would be great to see him in action.

I’m sure all the traded players will be good to go for tomorrow. That’s the main reason they moved the deadline from Tuesday to Wednesday this year.
