Penguins demote Satan
The Pittsburgh Penguins have assigned forward Miroslav Satan to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL), it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.
>> team release
The Penguins are trying to save their season right now, and with Bill Guerin's $4.5-million salary coming in, this is the best way for them to free up payroll space.
As I said earlier today, Guerin's a slight upgrade over Satan — which isn't saying much. He's 38 years old, so expecting him to turn Pittsburgh's season around is expecting too much.

When they first waived him, I figured the only teams that would be interested at all in Satan would be the ones with self-imposed salary caps, and figured that no one would want him at his 3.5M price, even pro-rated. I bet that would change if the Pens brought him up on re-entry waivers though. Now if only they had the cap room to try to bring him up…

Nope
If he went through re-entry waivers after the deadline, he can’t play for another team down the stretch.
More fun than a stick to the face!

I don’t have time to break out the CBA on my computer, but presumably the only options for Satan are:
1) Play out the season in the AHL
2) Get called up on re-entry waivers by the Penguins, play for the Penguins (if they have the cap space – counting on long-term injury reserve, etc.)
3) Get called up on re-entry waivers, get claimed, stay in the AHL

Oh thats right, you can’t add players from another team after the deadline, I forgot about that.

Ugh
Still smacking my head that Nashville didn’t claim Satan. He’s got warts, but he would definitely have helped.

Didn’t realize Guerin was making that much. Wow.

I just don’t get the way the Penguins handled Satan. He’s spent the bulk of the year on the 3rd and 4th lines. Hell, I think he deserves a medal for somehow managing to put up 17 goals with the jerking around he’s gone through this year.

Here’s a look at Satan’s most frequent linemates … he played a ton with Crosby:
Shifts Line Combination
602 EV 87 CROSBY,SIDNEY – 9 DUPUIS,PASCAL – 81 SATAN,MIROSLAV
427 EV 87 CROSBY,SIDNEY – 81 SATAN,MIROSLAV – 25 TALBOT,MAXIME
278 EV 48 KENNEDY,TYLER – 81 SATAN,MIROSLAV – 25 TALBOT,MAXIME
233 EV 48 KENNEDY,TYLER – 81 SATAN,MIROSLAV – 11 STAAL,JORDAN
228 EV 71 MALKIN,EVGENI – 81 SATAN,MIROSLAV – 17 SYKORA,PETR
178 EV 87 CROSBY,SIDNEY – 26 FEDOTENKO,RUSLAN – 81 SATAN,MIROSLAV

I went and played with that myself some.
Satan (11 even strength goals) played 3383 shifts on 121 different even strength line combinations. 59.6% of those took place with either Crosby or Malkin or both on the ice.
Offensive force Pascal Dupuis (9): 2944, 87 and 68.9%.
Petr Sykora (10. Yes, 10): 3236, 100 and 75.3%.
Ruslan Fedotenko (12): 2459, 76, and 66.0%.
I still contend Satan did not exactly get a fair shake.

This thing's neat
Satan had 24 EV points. 15 (62.5) with Sid and/or Geno on the ice.
Dupuis: 21, 16, 76.2
Sykora: 25, 20, 80.0%
Fedotenko: 24, 19, 79.2%

I suppose “shifts” is technically an incorrect term to use, since this tool would appear to count any 1 second spent on the ice with a couple other guys, but “shift” is a lot shorter of a way to say all that!

Do the reserve callups for the playoffs have to fit under the cap?
by rsm on Mar 5, 2009 5:52 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Only during the regular season. There’s no cap during the playoffs.
