Especially the part about the banks not wanting to finance contracts of veteran players in the minors.

I’m sure they were, especially given that McPhee apparently had a trade lined-up with Calgary, but Nylander refused it. At least that contract mistake is fixable sooner rather than later; I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Caps buy out the last two years of his contract in the off-season.
