Ribeiro's circus goal in the shootout
You really wonder what the goaltender's supposed to do in this situation, with a player backing into him like that. Pokecheck, I guess? Or come up with some sort of circus save to combat the circus goal?
My thanks to Robert S. for sending this one in.

The Altidudes were calling this game from ice level, and Peter McNab was on the Avs bench. Before Ribeiro’s attempt the Stars were all talking to him. McNab assumed they were giving some pointers on Budaj. Instead, it must have been more like “hey, do that crazy spin move, Mike!”

If im the goalie, I’m actually fine with that kind of move. Ribeiro’s put himself in such an awkward physical position, with the puck on his backhand, that’s he’s limited his shooting options. He can’t really deke, and he can only take a backhand shot. The only difficult shot Ribeiro can take is the one he did – and more often than not he’s either going to miss that shot.
I highly doubt that Ribeiro would try that move if his team’s still in a playoff hunt.

Starting from the fact that this particular game was absolutely pointless, and the fact that the shootout is, by design, a fan gratification tool, then this is great.
Ribeiro knows his team isn’t making the playoffs, for all intents and purposes the 2 teams tied and there’s no real additional ‘team pride’ to gain in winning this in a shootout (especially against Budaj!), so why not go with the exhibition?

Great, now every nine year-old in North America will be practicing this move. Ban the shootout now.

It’s just a little fun, dude. Relax with the whole “what about the poor children” melodrama and try to enjoy it.

I agree, there should be more Calvinball in hockey shootouts.

Haha! True,
Goalie: Saved! Woohoo!
Shooter: But I touched you with the Calvinball.
Goalie: D’oh!

That was not a well-presented piece of humor from me. I coach Mites and they all watch these things on YouTube and then try them. What should be videoed for YouTube is when these kids try them in practice.

How about just not go down into the butterfly so quickly? Budaj gives up the entire upper half of the net when he goes that low.

Did you watch the video? Cuz Budaj actually goes down in the BF, gets a piece of it and it hops OVER HIM TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE CREASE and rolls in on his left. How did he go down to quickly? He reacts to the shot. It wasn’t like he got down in the BF twenty seconds before the shot.
Also, how does leaving the upper half of the net come into play when the puck ROLLED IN ALONG THE ICE?
Please explain.

Yeah, the goalie is supposed to do exactly what Budaj did. He stopped the puck and just got unlucky that it bounced in instead of out.
