A note on the playoff push

So, two days left in the season, counting today and tomorrow, but everyone who's getting in is already in. And it took 93 points in the Eastern Conference and 90 in the West to clinch.

In other words, this year's playoff push projections were just fine.

A big reason why the projected cutoff number goes higher than people think is teams like the Blues, who no one expected to be in the mix at all two or three months ago. Anaheim, Carolina and Pittsburgh are three other clubs that were on the outside looking in not long ago, and they've all been red hot for ages.

Since Feb. 1
Pittsburgh: 20-6-4 (.733)
Carolina: 20-8-2 (.700)
St. Louis: 20-7-6 (.697)
Anaheim: 17-11-1 (.603)

I'm not sure I can recall a season when so many of the lower-seeded teams in the first round had such a great 30+ game finish, but it could make for some great games next week.

I've been a fan of the Note for as long as I can remember (about 28 years, give or take) . . .

and I can’t say that I’ve been prouder of a Blues team that I’ve seen with my own eyes. This would’ve held true even if they’d fallen just short of the Second Season.

What I saw last night was indescribable.

And I can’t think of anyone that wants to face these guys right now. They’ve just been on fire for the last two months and have shown no signs of slowing.

Don't forget Vancouver

Pretty cool story for the Blues, and Anaheim has looked very good the last while. I’m also really curious to see how Columbus looks in these playoffs — an upset certainly isn’t out of the question.

I think the Canucks are worth mentioning in this company too, especially with that somewhat arbitrary Feb.1 cutoff. On that date, they were in 22-20-8, in 11th place in the west. Since then, they’ve gone 23-7-2 (.750), putting them at the top of this list.
