Giguere era ends in Colorado

The Avalanche announced about an hour ago that they'd "relieved" executive VP/general manager Francois Giguere of his duties after just three years in the big seat.
And I wonder how long it'll take to undo what's been done.
Colorado's performance the past two seasons was certainly affected by injuries, but some of Giguere's personnel decisions were mind-boggling. How on earth could any GM make the mistake of signing not only Andrew Raycroft but also Darcy Tucker after the years they had in Toronto in 2007-08? Monster contracts for Ryan Smyth and Scott Hannan? A team that finished close to dead last and has $44-million committed to the cap next season even without Joe Sakic's contract?
Yikes.
Here's Avalanche president, alternate governor and former GM Pierre Lacroix on the need for a new management structure in Denver:
"The results of this season are unacceptable. We feel a new direction is needed which re-emphasizes those standards of excellence our fans have grown accustomed to since 1995. We will work diligently towards reclaiming our identity that made our brand so special and unique.
"We are too proud of what we have accomplished in this market to ignore where we are and what happened in just a very short period of time. Ownership and the dedicated Avalanche fans throughout the region deserve better results.
"The immediate future of this franchise is my primary concern so it was important to act now and start the process of restoring this franchise to where it belongs."
I've yet to hear a plausible scenario for someone taking over in Colorado, but Giguere's ouster doesn't bode well for Tony Granato behind the bench. All signs point to Patrick Roy coming in as coach in the near future, and it wouldn't be a huge surprise if he has some input as to who wears the GMs cap.
Time for a new era in Denver — this one didn't go so well.

Eric Lacroix as GM and Patrick Roy as coach is what a friend of mine predicted, and I don’t think that’s too far off the mark.
Of course, it actually was Pierre Lacroix who hired Granato after he fired Hartley, and retained him as an assistant when Quennville was hired, so he obviously has a strong affinity for Tony G.

Is your friend perhaps named Woody Paige?
From his article a couple weeks ago.
And once Pierre retakes over, he should discuss hiring a new coach, the old hockey goalie.
Patrick Roy.And he and Roy could discuss hiring a new assistant coach, the old head coach.
Bob Hartley. And they could discuss the hiring of a new general manager-in-waiting, the old Avalanche player.
Eric Lacroix.
I swear if Paige is prophetic with this, I will punch things.

At least he didn’t trade for them.
/pointing out the bright side.

Hey in all fairness
He would have, but he had already given a 1st & 3rd rounder to Columbus for Foote.

If (when?) Tucker gets bought out this off-season, would that make him the first player to be bought out twice under the CBA?

I don't know
but i’m not sure he’ll be bought out. The new GM may not want his contract carrying over to the following year, when the Cap is expected to drop.

In all fairness
Monster contracts for Ryan Smyth and Scott Hannan?
the Ryan Smyth contract isn’t looking too bad right now. I have this hypothesis that power forwards’ (like Smyth and Holmstrom) value isn’t really reflected in traditional stats. How many goals do Smyth and Holmstrom help by standing in front of the net and screening the goalie, and drawing traffic in front of the net, but don’t get credit for with points.
Basically Smyth and Holmstrom help create a lot of goals that don’t show up in the assist column.
And James.. how could you not mention FG’s worst mistake… hiring Tony Granato without even interviewing another candidate, like oh, I don’t know…Todd McLellan. That’s where the season fell apart.

Good point. Although it’s likely McLellan would have been offered the Sharks job, too, and which one would do you think he would have taken?

No Idea
But it’s criminal to not even have gauged his interest considering Granato had already failed in Colorado.

I dont' know
McLellan may have taken the SJ job too, but there were other candidates the avs could have interviewed.
DeBoer was a candidate that was thrown out there, and also Kevin Dineen. Not even talking to these guys was just a monumental mistake.

Dineen may get his shot in Buffalo when Ruff is canned.
Shut up when you're talking to me!

Is Ruff for sure getting canned?
I’ve heard the rumor, but that seems insane. He’s a good coach (And the Avs should hire him immediately if he’s fired)

Let’s take Regier and Ruff off of Buffalo’s hands then!

First O’Connell, JFJ and now Giguere. And will any of those 3 get another GM gig?
