Oilers fire MacTavish

Edmonton Oilers General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the club has relieved Craig MacTavish of his head coaching duties.

He completes his coaching tenure behind the Oilers bench ranked second among Edmonton coaches in games coached, wins, losses, ties/overtime losses and winning percentage.

Tambellini stated, “On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank Craig and his family for their outstanding commitment to the Edmonton Oilers and the city of Edmonton over the past 10 years.”

>> team release

There had been some discussion about whether or not MacTavish stepped down, but the wording on the press release doesn't seem to indicate that. All in all, this isn't a surprise given some of MacTavish's comments and benchings at the end of the season.

Lowetide and Jonathan Willis will have more on this one shortly, I'm sure.

Ruff is also a possibility

If he’s let go out of Buffalo, as some are speculating.

Ruff’s an Alberta native and may appreciate being close to home.

Shut up when you're talking to me!

Ruff never played for the Oilers in the ‘80s, so he won’t be considered.

Quite A Bit More, Actually

First, there’s my take on the firing and who will likely end up replacing MacTavish, and second I recap some reaction from the players and media and find myself angry at Ethan Moreau.

Amicable

MacT’s mannerisms throughout the year make me think this might have been a clean break for both parties.

Tom Renney

would be a good candidate for that position
