I don’t think anyone in Vancouver is counting on a better Sundin anymore. Many (including myself) hoped to see more in the playoffs. He didn’t step it up last night - the playoff pace left him even further behind. Hopes are flagging.

If he doesn’t get better - and quickly - I’d take him out of the lineup. Pyatt will be back soon and Vigneault can’t pull Mason Raymond. The Canucks would be a better team if Mats developed a minor undisclosed injury.

i’m not sure Benjamin was ever a fan of the Sundin signing – so its not surprising to see a comment like this. Imean, he didn’t produce in game 1, so clearly, he’s never going to produce!

I’m not a fan of Sundin in any way, but basically giving up on him for not stepping up in one game is a bit rash.

Sundin’s been a relative non-factor all season, so I guess the disappointment comes in the fact that that didn’t change come the playoffs. Vancouver needs him to step up.

His best asset at this point is just using his body behind the net and hope someone hooks him for the man advantage. If he can sneak a clever pass to Demitra or Kesler in the process, that’s probably the best we’ll see of him, barring some sort of miracle.

On the plus side, he has stopped taking absolutely terrible hooking calls. And watch I will have just jinxed it…

He has no goals in 14 straight games. It’s not just about not stepping up in one game.

Tom was fine with the signing

As he viewed this as a low-risk move. The Canucks had cap space at that point (mid season) and they had no other free agent that they could go after and they had no depth to trade for a top-6 forward. Tom figured at worst, Sundin wouldn’t hurt the team. It’s close to the worst case at this point other than the intangibles in the dressing room that fans have little ability to see.

My opinion, with no proof whatsoever,

is that the debilitating hip we heard rumors about 2 years ago was true. He just hasn’t got the speed anymore, in saying that, he is still a force in the opposition end if he ever gets there and effective on the powerplay.

Or missing training camp and half the season completely blew his rhythm, timing, and conditioning.

his timing

is off. Incredibly off. After watching him for so many years in TO, I don’t think skipping half the season did him any favours.

He also is still taking rediculously short shifts. We’re not party to everything going on, is my feeling. If they need him, they’ll play the pants off of him, but it seems he’s on cruise control for a reason.

I don't think its timing that is the real problem,

He used to blow the doors off defenceman speeding through the neutral zone, now he just can’t keep up. There is something wrong with his body and I think it is the hip.

Tom's dead on the money here...

Sundin skates upright, back-straight, taking short and choppy strides. His speed is completely gone (something that’s especially evident when he’s on the ice with Kesler or Mason Raymond). He’s somewhat valuable to have in the line-up as a niche player—taking a shift on the power-play and against weaker opposition where he can control the play against the boards—but he’s not going to be a real factor for Vancouver in these playoffs.

The tough decision comes when (if) Pyatt returns. Do you take Hordichuck out of the line-up and lose some of your fourth-line grit in favor of keeping Sundin? Because based on the way that the Raymond/Wellwood/Bernier line is playing right now, they’re more valuable than Sundin…

sundin sucks? so what?

I really don’t get why Canucks fans feel a need to bash the team when they’re playing well. Isn’t it tradition to wait for a calamity (such as a two-game losing streak)?

Sundin’s presence is still good for the team: Jackman was taking shifts against Sundin’s line instead of the Sedin line. Sundin’s linemates are productive and he wins faceoffs. As long as he doesn’t take the stupid penalties, he can take all week to go blueline-to-blueline if the team is still winning.

Plus, you have a veteran who knows he’s near the end of the line, and who knows how much it means to have a chance to go on a playoff run, and presumably is vocal about that in the locker room, and you want to bench him in favour of a random mucker? What kind of example would that set for the rest of the team?

Pyatt is a world class bum. I’d prefer he never play another game for the Canucks. As for Sundin he looked disconnected with the spirit and flow of game on Wednesday against the Blues. The club’s season worst -5 Mats looked more like an embedded reporter than a willing participant. Might as well have him wear an orange reflective vest over his uniform.

So we might be spared the "All Sundin, all the time’ coverage this off season with respect to where/or if he wil return??

Whoa, whoa whoa — now let’s not rush to any rash conclusions! The hockey media will need time to think about whether or not to continue 24/7 Sundin coverage…
