Theodore and the beach ball
It only took one poor game for the Jose Theodore photoshops to make an appearance:
There's been an awful lot of talk that Simeon Varlamov may make an appearance in this series, something coach Bruce Boudreau did a nice job of quieting earlier today. Still, if Theodore struggles in Game 2 on Saturday afternoon, my guess is the young Russian gets his shot.
And that's not necessarily a bad thing, given how he's played.

Your tossed-off last line would seem to reflect a lack of consideration of the excellent statistical analysis of Jose Theodore’s performance on Japers’ Rink, including:

Why is No One Talking about Jose Theodore?.
I could link to plenty more posts, but the point is: Don’t buy into the dominant MSM meme without having considered the data.

My last line is in reference to Varlamov’s strong showing this season.

Tyler — Consider the data that shows Theodore has won 4 of his last 15 playoff starts.
That’s really what it’s all about: winning this time of year. Frankly, Theodore doesn’t do much of it.
I wouldn’t put Varlamov in now, I’d give Theo one more chance; it’s foolish to have him as your #1 all season long and not give him a second chance. But if he plays as typical “Joe-zay Three-or-more”, I think you gotta go to the change to save your season.

Jose’s also never lost a first round series. And if you’re going with “4 of his last 15” as an indication that what happened in 2005-06 is somehow relevant, might as well include his 4 wins and a loss from the first round that year, so 8 of his last 20. Still not great, of course, but history is history and one wonders how much any of that matters (hint: not much).
But I think we’re all in agreement here – he absolutely deserves another shot in Game 2, and if he’s bad (not just if he loses, but if he’s bad in doing so), you push the panic button and play Varly if for no other reason than you’d have to be worried about the team playing in front of a G they may have stopped believing in.

Might not have ever lost a first round series, but he’s never won a second round series.

Get out the tape measure
I think the biggest problem here is that the beachball itself doesn’t meet NHL specifications. If it was actually regulation size, Theo would at least be getting a piece of it.

colorado fans say: “we told you so” and “who says we should have re-signed him now?”

I’m not sure Avs fans have much say given Raycroft’s still in uniform there. :-)

I understand Avs management bought him a snowblower to play with in the offseason.

Actually, Raycroft’s contract is up. And Raycroft only made 800k. At least we’re not completely screwed against the cap, like we would have been with Theo’s 4.5 a year. We’re only kinda screwed. :p
Seriously, when everyone in the media was screaming that Colorado was dumb for not re-signing Theo, did they even consider how overpriced he was? 4.5m for 2.87 GAA and .900 sv. pct. — that’s nuts. I’ll take Budaj’s 2.86 GAA and .899 sv. pct — behind a far worse team — for 1/6th the cap hit of Theo any day of the week.

And the Caps will take Theo for 2 years at 4.5 mill over Huet’s contract (how’s he looked in the playoffs?)!

Arguably? Better from the bench than Theo has looked on the ice…

Maybe so. But I’m sure CHI could have done something better with that 5.5 mill than put it into a back up goalie. I’m not saying Theo is good. I’m just saying Theo at 2 yrs/ 4.5 per is a better deal for the Caps than Huet at 4/5.5. Considering we may well be watching the emergence of our future goalie there was no point to have a goalie locked into a 4 year deal being paid more than Brodeur or Nabokov. Huet is clearly not that level of goalie or he wouldn’t be a back up. I’m not sure what the “Arguably” comment is about. I didn’t say anything was arguable. I’m saying that COL may be better off with Budaj and Raycroft than they would be with Theo; and the Caps are better with Theo than they would be with Huet. The two statements are not mutually exclusive.

As recently as 2004 Theodore beat the Bruins nearly by himself to bring Montreal back from being down 3 game to 1.

2004 was a few years ago. I mean, I was still in high school then, and now I’m out of college.

If you believe McGuire
After the lock out when the league reduced the size of equipment, the Habs allegedly according to McGuire put Theodore through various exercises and tests and he failed miserably. That’s why they dumped him to Colorado and went with Huet.

And that’s why you should never believe McGuire. He doesn’t know a damn thing about any damn thing.
