Sather's letter
In case you missed it, Rangers GM Glen Sather responded to the suspension of head coach John Tortorella with a lengthy letter to the NHL that slams the Capitals' "gross negligence in ensuring the safety of the personnel" on the New York bench during Game 5:
Subject: Washington vs. New York, Game 5
Dear Gary:
In addition to your suspension of Coach Tortorella for his actions during last night’s game, we respectfully request that you consider appropriate discipline in light of Washington’s gross negligence in ensuring the safety of the personnel on the Rangers’ bench, including Coach Tortorella, in the face of the Rangers’ repeated requests for intervention against egregious fan misconduct during Game 5. As importantly, we would like the League’s intervention to ensure that there are adequate security measures in place to protect our personnel in the event there is a Game 7 in Washington.
Neither the NHL nor either team has had the opportunity to conduct a full investigation or to interview all witnesses but the television coverage and the statements made by Rangers bench personnel make clear that Washington utterly failed in its security obligations to the Rangers, not to mention its own fans. The tension was evident from before the opening face-off. Throughout the game, several people seated immediately behind the visitors’ bench took advantage of the looseness of the glass panels and the unusually wide gaps between the panels to assault the Rangers with some of the most obscene language imaginable. Because of the way the glass is installed, the patron sitting behind Coach Tortorella (the gray-haired, bearded man in the white T-Shirt) could literally scream into the coach’s ear. According to Rangers trainer Jim Ramsay, one patron was screaming at the team, in graphic language, about whether Dan Girardi and Marc Staal have a sexual relationship. This was within earshot of several children seated nearby. Several other fans also made repeated homophobic remarks. Moreover, Mr. Ramsay reported that he and other bench personnel were spit on by one or more “fans” as they yelled through the gaps in the glass.
Your statement tonight referred to alerting security. In the first period, Mr. Ramsay warned the security guard stationed on the nearest stairwell (a large African-American man) that the situation was unacceptable and was likely to get ugly. No action was taken. The misconduct continued. In the second period, Mr. Ramsay warned a female security supervisor that some fans were out of control and that he was concerned that something unfortunate was going to happen. Although this supervisor was equipped with a radio, she apparently took no action, because the same fans were in their seats when the team returned to the bench for the third period. According to press accounts, no fans were ever ejected or permanently removed from their seats.
Washington’s failure to respond to what its personnel knew — and were specifically warned — was a potentially dangerous situation contributed significantly to this unfortunate incident. Accordingly, we respectfully request that you consider imposing appropriate discipline on Washington for its knowing failure to protect the Rangers and prevent the situation from deteriorating into an incident that reflects badly on all of us. In addition, we must immediately discuss how Washington is going to handle security for any Game 7. Neither the Rangers nor the well-behaved Capitals fans should be forced to endure the extraordinary level of fan misconduct that Washington failed to prevent in Game 5.
Thank you for your consideration.
Glen
Who knew hockey fans were so rowdy in D.C.?

A bit more focus on his management duties and a bit less on the enthusiasm of the Capitals fans might be advisable at this juncture. The Rangers may be more equal in the eyes of the NHL than any other club but this is just desperate.

Did he really have to get so specific about what the hecklers were saying? Seems like an invitation to more trouble.

Stuff like this just doesn’t happen in other NHL arenas, especially Madison Square Garden.

It is almost impossible at MSG as the fans dont sit right behind the glass, there is a walkway between the seats and the bench that usually has a few security guards – today it was lined with them.

I love it! What you’re saying is that if not for the layout of the arena this would be a regular occurrence.

Conversely I’ve never been pelted with beer or been threatened with physical violence at the Verizon Center.

Your day is coming, Leafs fan!
If I had the wings of an eagle,
If I had the arse of a crow,
I'd fly over New York tomorrow,
And shite on those bastards below.

it’s gamesmanship and we should expect nothing less. And it did seem strange to me that no one was ejected-I’ve seen fans ejected in Vancouver for far less.

This is Interesting...
Because no one will take this seriously, even though some should.
Here’s to a Caps choke in Game 7 like last year, however unlikely it is.

Huh? A penalty in OT is considered choking?

Maybe if the Rangers had simply answered the fan’s question, this would have all blown over????

Would that make Staal a good leader in the clubhouse?

Yeah, rather odd to go into specifics. Fully expecting this line to pop up in snark across the Web:
“…Dan Girardi and Marc Staal have a sexual relationship.”
>>Glen Sather, in an urgent letter to Gary Bettman before Game 6.
Is MSG taking homophobic slurs seriously now, or did Sather just include that stuff for melodramatic effect? ‘Cause if there’s a real issue with event security or with Caps fans being able to harass the bench, it doesn’t really matter what the specific taunts were.

Yeah, I was honestly wondering about that — and whether Sather or the PR person who convinced him to publicize the letter also thought, “and why don’t we subtly demonstrate our concern about homophobia while we’re at it…”

Leave it to Glen Sather to make a wimpy team seem even more wimpy.
Sather should spend more time figuring out how he’s going to rebuild a Rangers team that is heavily loaded with overpaid underachievers, than worrying about what people are yelling.
Whats next? A letter to the league asking for special security when the fans at MSG yell “Fire Sather?”
Jackass.

Well, in his defense, is the construction of the glass panels behind the benches in Washington truly different from the rest if the league? I imagine it isn’t, but I’d love to know for sure.
As the saying goes, just saying someone is paranoid doesn’t mean the whole world isn’t out to get them

This list is almost endless
Top 5 Rangers Salary Cap Skaters:
Scott Gomez – 7,357,143
Chris Drury – 7,050,000
Wade Redden – 6,500,000
Michal Rozsival – 5,000,000
Markus Naslund – 4,000,000
Derek Morris – 3,916,667
Those top 5 salaries are criminal.

Funny how things change...
I have heard people in Denver actually complaining about trading away Derek Morris. Of course they will never get over the Drury trade.
For that money the Rangers can keep ’em.

Well the Caps have our own right now....
underachiever that is…. Can anybody spell Nylander… Every team seems to have one on any given year. Right now the only Rangers star even trying to earn his pay is Hank and well… I just hope he doesn’t steal game 7 from us… To my eyes this is all gamesmanship and trying to get some sort of distraction going… Hope it doesn’t come close to working…LETS GO CAPS!!!

I have a feeling Marc Staal and Dan Girardi would’ve rather had their names left out of that letter.

There is a positive
At least they didn’t boo the national anthem like in Montreal.
Shouldn’t the NHL be happy that fans in Washington know the names of opposing players?

Somebody should inform Sather that the Capitals do not run security at the Verizon Center. They do not own the arena, and all employees working at the center—including the event staff and security personnel—don’t answer to Ted Leonsis or the team management. They have little to no control over that, just like the ice issues.
Abe Pollin, former owner of the Capitals and current owner of the Washington Wizards and Mystics, is the owner of Verizon Center.

This Letter and "Controversey" Seems Lauaghable
To paraphrase Forrest Gump – “My Momma Always Told Me… Sticks and stones can break my boine but names will never harm me.” I can also say if some other paying customer, like the parent/escort of the children in the alleged area were the ones to complain about the langauge, etc. action would have been taken swiftly. As a Caps Season Ticket holder I’ve seen it happen, and as a guy who occasionally has a slip I can tell you my nearby Season Ticket Holders in my section are always quick to point out children to me so I catch myself after the first or second “Da**” etc…
Most Caps regular fans tend to be very respectful – Bottom line to me is Tortorella is/was/and always will be dead wrong on this, even if a fan attending the game did what is alleged he was baited and he took it. He knows there should be no interaction between the “players” and the ans in the stands, he crossed the line.
The stuff today about Brashear and especially the stuff sbout Morrison is wierd to me. that said if Brashear gets suspended for any action yesterday it should be for the interaction with Orr before the game. That said how does Brashear get supplimental disciplne on that and not Orr? However, Brashear means more to the Caps then Orr does to the rangers in a Series Game 7 like this. The ShaMo stuff I find hard to believe given he wears a visor…and if someone got bitten “in a scrum” how do you know who the biter is – dental impressions?…
Finally as for fan langauge and commentsd I’ve been to MSG and this “holier than thou stuff” is just disingenuine – ask Tom Poti…
Anyway it’s a one game series now - LETS GO CAPS!!!
