The National Hockey League, which loaned the Phoenix Coyotes money in February to keep the team in business, is now running the franchise and has promised Glendale that the NHL would reimburse the city for parking fees and security costs owed by the team, Glendale City Manager Ed Beasley said.

A bit of a catch-22, no?
these teams (Miami, Phoenix), can’t win without fan support (can’t sign big name FA’s, etc). They can’t get fan support unless they win, just like almost every other team in the U.S.
Don’t see the point in pulling the plug on them, just because they’ve sucked on the ice forever.

I’m afraid they don’t have a choice unless someone wants to own the team in that location.

One first rounder can change everything for a team (Washington…)

Speaking of revenues, how much influence (if any) do you feel the league exerts on officials to make sure playoffs are resolved in a financially favorable manner? For example, making calls that will extend a series and/or reward larger hockey markets. It can be no secret that Detroit, Chicago, and Boston would generate better ratings and revenues than Anaheim, Vancouver, and Carolina.
Do you think this enters the fray? And if so, to what degree?

As a public service announcement, I should point out that a rigorous scientific study found that tinfoil hats actually make the orbital mind control lasers more effective. Don’t fall for the government spread “advice” on how to avoid their plot. In reality, you need to live in a full Faraday Cage.

Wait … it’s actually JMN in the picture. It explains so much.

Vancouver?
I think they’re one of the main supporters of the welfare fund along with Montreal and Toronto. They would probably generate more for their home games these playoffs than depression ravaged Detroit.

Was thinking more along the lines of US TV ratings. But I take your point.

The league has absolutely 100% control of the officiating. After all, it is the league that hires some of these incompetent clowns (e.g. Furlatt, McGeough [now retired, obv]) to give some twisted and mangled version of “NHL-level officiating”, which often results in frustration and mayhem for all parties involved.
In other words, there is no conspiracy in NHL officiating – just utter incompetence.

Well, the refs tonight in CHI-VAN seem to be doing their damn best to prove me right tonight – utter incompetence.

Coyotes nw refuting that NHL in control.
From the same Article updated this evening.
Coyotes President Doug Moss refuted that report late Wednesday night, saying the league has not assumed control of the Coyotes.
“We are not reporting to the league,” he said. "We report to (owner) Jerry Moyes. I’m dealing with things in my area, the business side, and Donnie (General Manager Don Maloney) is dealing with the hockey side.
“It’s business as usual. He’s preparing for the draft. I’m preparing for next year on marketing and sales.”

What's with the city manager?
“We are sitting down with the NHL and working confidentially with them, and the city expects to be paid in full.”
“Confidentially,” except when I decide to talk to the press?
