The nominees are in ... Who's your pick to win the Masterton Trophy?

I'm going to leave this poll up all the way until the night of the NHL awards, so hopefully the vote totals can get up there. It takes maybe a minute to sign up for an sbnation.com account and you'll be logged into all 29 hockey blogs (soon to be 31), so it's well worth it.
You can also sign in using your Yahoo ID.
Just a quick note that this award does not have to be given to a player who missed time due to injury. By definition, it's for "the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey."

My ballot
1) Zednik
2) Numminen
3) Pothier

As far as “perseverance” you really have to consider Numminen. Unlike some of the other players that have come back from injury, Teppo had every reason to walk away and just retire. Yet he comes back and plays (at least) one more season…

Exactly
But I can’t put him over someone who nearly died on the ice and not only made a complete recovery, but is back to his pre-injury level of play.
I feel bad leaving Sullivan out too.

I disagree – three words: open heart surgery. Teppo had a long, solid NHL career and decided to come back for another kick at the can just for his love of the game. There really was no question that Zed was going to come back, even he said it at his first presser after the incident. He was just going to wait until it healed and jump back on the ice. He, like everyone else, knew it was a fluke thing – the odds of it happening again are microscopic. That’s why I put both Teppo and Sully ahead of him. Open heart surgery edges out two years of painful back recovery, but just by a little.
My 3
1-Teppo
2-Sullivan
3-Zednik

Foster came back and has only one point, but when there were questions about whether or not Foster would ever walk again, his one assist is the biggest point of the season.
Wild defenseman Kurtis Foster returned to the NHL today after just under a year and a 63-game absence as he recovered from a broken leg suffered at San Jose on March 19, 2008. Recalled Feb. 28 from Houston, where he was on a conditioning assignment, Foster was last-minute addition to the lineup because Brent Burns was scratched due to illness. Foster missed the pre-game warm-ups, but went on to take 12 shifts.
“He was a little rusty,” said Lemaire. “It is not easy to come in. He was on the bike for an hour before the game and then Burns couldn’t play, so we told him at the last second, ‘Get dressed, you’re playing.’ So it’s kind of hard for him. But he did fine.”
Despite being a little rusty, Foster was excited at the chance to get back on the ice with his team after such a long time away.
“I just had to get dressed quick and get right out there,” Foster said. “In the third period, my legs were a bit spent, but, by the time that I got out there and realized what was going on out there, and that I was back in the NHL, it was just fun to be out there, and I bet you couldn’t find me not smiling out there.”
With only 18 games remaining, Foster still feels confident that he can help his team turn things around.
“I still have a ways to go, there are still certain things I need to work on and certain things I need to improve, but for the most part I feel pretty good, pretty strong and I think that after a few games and getting confident again I could really help the team.”

There were questions about a lot of these players playing again. A couple guys were out a year or more.
Foster definitely had a brutal injury, but he’s got considerable company this season.

I never knew until this year that every single team had a nominee. What the hell are half of these guys nominated for? The Masterton is supposed to be a kind of comeback of the year or perseverence through adversity award, right? Half these guys are nominated because they suck but they’re still just hanging around.
1) Steve Sullivan, for making a real comeback
2) Chris Chelios, for commitment, dedication, and perseverence in continuing to play the game at the age of 90
3) Richard Zednik, for getting stabbed in the neck and still making a difference
Seriously, what the hell did Daniel Alfredsson do? Cut his stupid hair? Most of these are jokes. Who is nominating these guys?

each team has to nominate a player so i guess its the GM/President that decide.

Nominations
It’s actually the local hockey media in each area that nominate the player, not the GM/team.

The local chapter of the PHWA nominates a player from every team. They can also choose to not nominate a player, as the Rangers chapter did last season.

Actually, they don’t. There haven’t necessarily been representatives from every team every year. Heck, last year, the Kings nominated Modry after he was a Flyer.

Agreed
This isn’t a year when we sit back and think “WTF?” after that announcement. If we do, scrap the award forever.

I agree, and for my two cents, Sully should be the winner of this one.

I have a soft spot
for Sully, so I voted for him, but I fully expect Zednik to win. He almost died very dramatically….

It's a savvy kinda feeling, a suavey kinda feeling...
I would link to the post where I traded Drew Stafford’s angry eyebrows for Parros’s stache but there’s only so much self promotion I can muster. ;)

A lot more controversy than I had expected. Solid candidates, all.

I gotta go:
1. Zednik
2. Pothier
3. Clemmensen
Zednik: how do you watch a guy almost die on the ice and come back willingly, and not put him in the top three? Especially when he’s been as big a part of Florida’s shot at the playoffs as he has?
Pothier: Out 14 months with a concussion and then vision problems that left him in bed for a week after trying to play with his kids. Ignoring advice to retire, he gets the problem solved, practices for two solid months before being cleared, and then comes back to score a GWG in his fourth game back. He’s still doing vision therapy and probably will indefinitely.
Clemmensen: This guy got DISSED. Big-time. He saves the Devils’ butts for half a season with Brodeur out and then gets shipped back to the AHL when Brodeur comes back without so much as a thank you. He deserves better, and it’s to his credit that he’s still keeping up and simply looking for his next chance as calmly as he is.

Foster
I voted for him, and hope a vote for him is a vote for no-touch icing. Come on, PHWA, make a statement.
