Two days, three Game 7s: Are the miles adding up?

It's the second round that keeps on giving.

Boston beat Carolina 4-2 in Raleigh on Tuesday, setting up a showdown back in Beantown on Thursday for the right to move onto Round 3. Likewise, the Ducks won 2-1 in impressive fashion in Anaheim, and they, too, will play Detroit in a winner take all battle that same night.

And we already know all about the Caps-Pens Game 7 on tap for Wednesday.

Twenty-seven games played by eight teams has to be some sort of record for the second round, unless by chance its happened previously that all four series went the distance. I highly doubt it, given the odds involved.

Because we're dealing with a lot of long series already to this point, I wonder if fatigue may be a factor going forward. The past few Cup finalists have all played in a couple of short series en route to the fourth round, and that might not be the case this time around.

GP for Cup finalists (Round 1 to 3)
2008: Red Wings 16, Penguins 14
2007: Ducks 16, Senators 15
2006: 'Canes 18, Oilers 17
2004: Lightning 16, Flames 19
2003: Devils 17, Ducks 14

The Flames had a marathon journey five years ago, but the average length of the other surviving teams' postseason prior to the finals was only 15.89 games, or 5.3 a round, during this period. Escaping the early rounds quickly has seemingly been a decent path to success for a while now (although it also stands to reason that the best teams would likely have a lopsided series or two along the way).

GP for 2009 teams after two rounds

Team GP
Carolina 14
Washington 14
Anaheim 13
Pittsburgh 13
Chicago 12
Boston
11
Detroit 11

In theory, that's quite a few more miles for teams like the Hurricanes and Capitals through two rounds, and no team in the past five years has had to play 20+ games in the first three rounds and still advanced to the finals. The easy first round likely benefits Boston and Detroit at this point — and going forward should they move on. Chicago, meanwhile, will be the only team with any sort of rest before the conference finals and the only team that hasn't had to play a Game 7 after two rounds.

Just another theory for the pile.

It may be a factor in the conference finals, but not in the Cup finals due to the ridiculous layoff between the two series.

Certainly the league/owners don’t mind. More games=more revenue!

“Twenty-seven games played by eight teams has to be some sort of record for the second round”

Ties the record from 1985-86. Calgary-Edmonton (Steve Smith!), St. Louis-Toronto and Montreal-Hartford all went the distance. The Rangers beat the Caps in six.

In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through the 2009 Preliminary round, home teams in Game 7 have a 79-46 (.632) record in all rounds, but only a 19-17 (.528) record in the Quarterfinals round.

The first round of the 1992 postseason was even more extraordinary, odds-wise. Six of the eight series went seven games, the other two went six. 54 of a potential 56 games. Naturally, five of the seven remaining series from the second round on were sweeps. Too much of a good thing, I guess.

If Detroit wins Game 7, they still will have played 1 less game than the Hawks have… unless you count that 3 OT game as two.

Boston should be OK if they can advance, but Carolina and Washington are playing Game #14 and one has to think one of them will be getting exhausted by next round. Heck, if the two teams meet each other in Round 3, and the winner of that series doesn’t sweep, it’ll likely be the Finals where it all catches up to them.

But if Detroit and Boston both lose tomorrow… expect to see two fairly tired teams in the SCF.

So based on this, the per-series splits are:

DET 67% ANA 30% (Detroit 2:1 faves)
BOS 67% CAR 30% (Boston 2:1 faves)
WSH 50% PIT 47% (Even)

Hurricanes Blow Themselves Up.

When I hear the words “New York.” The first thing that comes to mind is the Rangers. I am quite certain, that is because we are still in hockey season. Before the signing of Avery, I had no impression/opinion of the Rangers one way or the other. I recall the incident with Avery that tossed him out of Dallas and I remember and posting, I feel sorry for any team hard up enough to sign him. We all know that Avery was signed by the Rangers. We know how he played and now the Coach too is circling down the drain and just needs to be flushed. Do I have compassion for the other members of the Rangers? The people on the payroll who sell the tickets? The Marketing folks and anybody affiliated with the Rangers? Sure I do. Avery has a long track record of being a piece of chit. The good thing, is the men who represent the NHL and do a fine job of it, know all about Avery. So they will protect themselves and each other. It wasn’t even 3 weeks ago, that I posted about being happy we were playing Carolina next. I went as far as posting they would play clean hockey. They would not be like Montreal. I didn’t sit and pace the floors worrying about the cheap shots or sucker punches to my team. Carolina HAD my respect but they don’t any longer. Staal was supposed to be this big scary guy, and a force to be reckoned with. You are kidding me right? The Kids is cagey, and very bright. But he isn’t THAT great. He doesn’t stand out (for me.) His brother is a Ranger. Do I like Staal? No opinion one way or the other. Then there was Cam Ward. A 25 year old Rock Star. Guy is good. Guy will be better and can possibly be an “elite” goalie. If you asked me today about Cam Ward, I would look at you and say who? Pardon me? I don’t remember Cam Ward now. I don’t remember the Hurricanes and where they finished or what they did for this season. They have destroyed it all. They have joined the likes of the Rangers and I think it is shameful that Walker wasn’t dealt with. Do you care what I think? Probably not. But my point is this. One bad apple does spoil the entire bunch. I wouldn’t eat from that tree if it was the only food/fruit I would ever get again. There are only 30 teams in the NHL. How many are going to fall from Grace because of one schmuck? Wake up NHL. You don’t have the following Baseball and Football have. Why is that? I don’t know. I could promote hockey for the rest of my life and you wouldn’t have to pay me a dime. Deal with these A holes and clean this up. Remember, for every one of me, there are hundreds. Most people just walk. I will walk but I will tell you why I left. How many more feel what I do? I don’t think you want to roll the dice on this one.

No Advantage

But with every team putting in the long miles there is no clear advantage for one team over another. Chicago may have avoided a game seven, but they had long hard rounds against Vancouver and Calgary

During the regular season, both conferences had tight playoff races right up until the last weekend, how late into the season was it and the Pens were not in a playoff position? The West had teams leapfrog 2 positions with a win.

Now a few weeks into the playoffs, we have a number of game 7’s, one series with three OT games, for the most part cvlose margin wins. Discount the Van-Stl, and the Bos-Mtl series, but are these signs of parity? Is this how a salary capped NHL should work?

by cubanpuckstopper on May 13, 2009 2:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that sounds like parity. And yes, I believe this is how the salary-capped NHL was intended to work.

Crosspost: I suppose all you pantywaists are looking for Niedermayer to be suspended now too, right? Let’s have the NHL start doling out suspensions for every penalty called on those barbaric hockey players. Until then you can start covering your eyes every time the action gets heated during the last couple minutes of a hockey game.
Or you can just try watching some knitting/crocheting playoffs, you delicate flowers.

Runner up for most random rant...

you’re the one making issues out of such things. Did you see datsyuk’s quote that effectively said (paraphrasing) “It’s part of the game. I’ve got more important things to worry about”

It was a non-issue (unlike holmstrom’s brutal elbow that had wisniewski whining to the media.)

I agree it’s a non-issue and nothing to worry about. I felt the same way about Walker’s punch too, not like most of the posters who whine if a player breaks a nail.

On the subject of a game 7, I’d like to go on record and say that, if Detroit loses this series, the blame doesn’t go to Chris Osgood. I don’t care if he looks horrible, and they lose 9-8. He’s done his job. Given the skill of the team in front of him, and the number of goals Osgood has allowed, they should have won four games already. The scorers haven’t been doing their job consistently. The goaltending has been fine.

by J. Michael Neal on May 13, 2009 4:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

For whatever reason, you want a quick first two rounds, but a long third round. Teams that won the third round in 5 or fewer games haven’t done well in the finals lately.

by RyanV on May 13, 2009 7:59 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Probably that long layoff coming off the conference finals?
