Good seats available for NHL awards

Three weeks from tomorrow, the NHL's experiment of moving its awards showcase to Las Vegas starts up, likely only a few days after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup playoffs. And, from a brief look at Ticketmaster, there are still plenty of seats available.

I was able to request 20 available seats together, which at $504 a piece (plus service charges), would run a little more than $10,700:

I'd heard that the NHL wasn't exactly thrilled with my last post on this subject, so I'll reiterate what a great deal I think these tickets are and my surprise that they've yet to sell out the 2,000 or so seats at the Palms.

Anyone planning on going to the event?

Another experiment, failed terribly.

Toronto is where it belongs, especially if attendance is a concern.

I think James maxed it out. :)

$504 dollar a piece I can’t see why they aren’t selling?

My guess is there will be enough players and others to fill out the bottom level and make it look somewhat full for TV.

Question how many non-hockey people attended the awards in Toronto? It always seemed to me that the crowd was mostly in-house people. I can’t image it was that big of an event.

They didn’t sell tickets to the public and the venue wasn’t nearly as big as the Palms. Different situation, really.

If the tickets were, say, significantly cheaper and the event was in Toronto, they could have sold quite a few seats I bet.

I thought about attending. Called my brother, asked if he was interested in going with me, turn it into a nice brotherly bonding trip in Vegas, which is a short jaunt from our home here in California.

The $504 price tag was the deal breaker.

Holy cow, and those are balcony seats you looked at?

Maybe SB Nation can get a bulk discount and send a few bloggers to cover the event. I want to be there as Steve Sullivan and Richard Zednik make their case for the Masterton with x-rays & anatomical charts.

More fun than a stick to the face!

I hear that Balsillie’s just waiting for the awards show to declare bankruptcy so that he can swoop in and move it to The Hamilton Club.

The price tag was a deal breaker when I started looking at potential flights to Las Vegas….

by pyle on May 27, 2009 4:55 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Simply a ludicrous price for an event. When you can stay for FOUR NIGHTS at the nicest hotels in Vegas for almost the same cost as attending the awards show, you know that you’ve lost touch with economic reality.

I actually planned out a trip to go. Airfare from D.C., three nights at GVR, plus a rental car was about the same as the cost of the ticket. The trip is now cancelled.

And another piece of evidence as to how pathetic the demand for the awards show is. Stubhub has ZERO award tickets available for purchase on their site. Granted, only a couple thousand seats, but when you can’t score a ticket to something on Stubhub, probably a sign you shouldn’t go.

I live in Vegas and do pretty much anything to encourage and support any hockey activity in town.. but no way I would pay 500 for that. It’s a ridiculous price for a seat to an event like that… maybe if it gave access to an afterparty with players or golf round but otherwise, I cannot believe anybody would pay that.

I did send my resume hoping to work for the event though. I cant wait to see how it will turn out. Better be more than 2mins highlight clips and speeches!

The ticket does include the after party, as detailed on the image above.

I’m with you on that. The price is insane – I don’t know which genius made that call but hopefully they will learn their lesson. Here’s to hoping they need some seat fillers. I’ll be in a suit as I am heading there right after work to try and see what I can see

A NHL Fundraiser

How else do you think the NHL is going to raise funds to throw at failing franchises? Recall the discussion on an earlier post on “maximizing profits”. The fans are just chumps to be milked for every cent possible.

Yet another great selling point for the NHL in Las Vegas!

You are validating my inherent mistrust of strangers.

Good call! Maybe part of the $500 ticket price is a deposit on future season tickets. Year TBD.

I am an American, I’m a huge hockey fan, and I would absolutely love to attend the awards.

There is no way in hell I would pay even 1/2 of what they are asking for tickets. The price would, however, be very reasonable if hotel and airfare were included.

Trying to get America excited about hockey shouldn’t mean overpricing events that not enough people want to attend.

by PaintDrinkingPete on May 27, 2009 9:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It also shouldn’t mean putting the awards banquet in the middle of a sleazy strip of hotels smack in the middle of one of the most uninspiring desert cities in North America.

Then again, since gambling and prostitution are in good supply I’m sure many of the players will love it.

You are validating my inherent mistrust of strangers.

by zyllyx on May 28, 2009 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow, now that is an informed statement. The Strip is not sleazy, I’m not sure where you got that impression from. The Strip has some average hotels, which may look sleazy compared to the jewels of the strip, but that only reinforces how nice the hotels there are. Some of the nicest hotels and restaurants anywhere in the country are there. Get over your hang ups about the vices and give credit where credit is due (and I’m sure you realize the prostitutes that are on the Strip, where it is illegal, are higher class prostitutes than you see on the corners of major American cities). Well done.

I don’t know what Bettman thinks, nor do I care. But this is just NUTZ.
I’ve been watching NHL since 1982 and its crazy what has happened to this sport.

The issue with visibility isn’t with the Awards being in Canada. The issue with visibility rests in the fact that the NHL is a joke in the US ( with exception to Original 6 teams, and a few others).

A realistic tv deal is what is missing, and no matter if the awards are held in Oklahoma, Washington, Duluth there will always be issues about who sees it.

If Bettman believes that the moving of teams to Vegas and KC will happen with more publicity by sending the Awards there, I’m all for it… so that he can prove once and for all that his ideas are INEFFECTIVE.

There’s been more changes to the sport of hockey than any other professional sport. And as much as there are movements in NFL and NBA and MLB, there isn’t a constant attempt by their Commissioners to develop teams in locations that a) don’t know the sport, b) had the sport and let it die, c) can be money makers for business men, not hockey guys. When teams make 138 million a yr in merchandise in Canada (The Montreal Canadians) its a tribute to the sport. I am betting that 138 million came from people in other provinces rather than just Quebec. Suggesting that if there are more markets (deemed viable) there would be more revenue, and sustainability of this sport in CANADA. I’m not against expansion, but, before we push it on an unstable market, how about taking those teams which are in trouble and placing them in markets that are stable? Get the game back, let the fans be the ones to decide where the league should move once they have the current teams in viable markets… no more expansion to places that don’t want a team in the first place.

As several other people have already said, I was very strongly inclined to go to this event until I saw the price tag. Even went to the trouble of researching the rates for a flight and hotel, assuming that the tickets to the awards show couldn’t possibly be more than $200-ish per person. As soon as I saw the actual price tag, that plan went right out the window.

Instead I’ll be taking a luxury cruise to Mexico for less than the price of 2 tickets. The NHL needs a major reality check if they think $500 is reasonable for any event.

by bostonblueline.blogspot.com on May 28, 2009 8:41 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm. I can go to the NHL Awards Show, which would, granted, probably be an experience of a lifetime…or I can use the $500 to pay for 25% of my season tickets for next season.

Decisions, deci—-decided.

$500 in this economy pretty much guarantees the everyday fan isn’t going to be going to this. And if they don’t get butts in the seat, then what’s the point of doing it in a bigger venue in Vegas?

I wish I could get seasons tickets. I’ll have to wait another 30 years.
