Games 3 and 4 of the Stanley Cup Final will be shown on the outdoor screen in front of Mellon Arena. Those are the two games broadcast nationally by Versus – Game 3 on Tuesday, June 2 and Game 4 on Thursday, June 4.
All other games of the Final will not be shown on the outdoor screen, consistent with NHL national broadcasting policy. Also, in accordance with the policy, road games will not be shown on the Mellon Arena jumbotron.

If that’s not a reason to watch CBC on an internet feed, I don’t know what is.

I mean, they pimped the crowd last year, way to rain on the parade.

I’m pretty sure CBC offered back in the first round, but Pens weren’t allowed to accept for whatever reason (NHL rules, I believe). The penalty is probably a fine, so just ask for a donation from everyone watching and you could probably cover it. If they set up a Paypal thing, I’d throw in a few bucks just to spite NBC

No no, they are, like, “partners” here to help. Looking out for us, until horse racing previews get in the way.

How I spent my New Year's Eve vacation
With tix for the QF and Semi’s secured, I regretted not buying WJC round-robins for the classic Dec. 31st tilt against Team USA.
With the game scheduled to end by 10PM, a few of us spent our anteparty hours on the Rideau Canal watching the big screen alongside a thousand or so revellers. Complete with fireworks and the picturesque backdrop of Parliament Hill, the scene was less Winter Classic than it was KHL ASG.
The next afternoon, I watched Datsyuk’s wind-aided goal from the comfort of my couch, and a day later, attended the Filatov vs. Czech match, live. A few days later, I moved to the upper bowl for Canada-Russia.
All those games were extremely enjoyable, but after the ’07 Duck Hunt rallies along Elgin, I retained a place in my heart for the outdoor giant-screen party.
With the memory of an overnight drive from Montreal to Pittsburgh for a Steelers game still haunting me, I likely won’t be attending the Mellon tailgate parties, but I’d recommend them to anyone within reasonable driving distance, sight unseen.

The NHL has worked themselves into the worst TV deal ever. This is just another example of the absurdities it has allowed.

Is this a new clause? I know for a fact that in 2006 the RBC Center showed away games on the jumbotron when they were televised by NBC.

Also, all sports bars in Pittsburgh will have their feeds blacked out, and if you watch it at home with friends, each person must bring their own TV.

Recommended. :)
You know the networks would if they could.

So is that admittance that Games 3 and 4 (on Versus) will not be nationally broadcasted?

Hunh? I’m sure that all of the games between Ottawa and Anaheim were broadcast outdoors during that series. Home and away. Is this a new policy?

I was under the impression that this was done in the past, I know Buffalo did it in 1999 and Calgary & Tampa Bay did it in 2004. I’m guessing the networks are not allowing this sort of thing in general anymore?

Yes, this was done by many teams in the past. What is so upsetting to Pens fans right now, is that it was allowed during last year’s run — and, yes, NBC even cut to shots of the outdoor crowd and said things along the line of “Isn’t that great! Look at how much fun people are having out there!” — and now, suddenly, it’s not allowed this season. It’s pretty ridiculous.

Way to keep the locals happy.
All about the “fan”, Versus is.

Um, how is it Versus’ fault that NBC won’t allow the games they’re broadcasting to be shown outdoors?

Question
Can you stand outside Mellon arena and watch the game on your Blackberry?
by Exit716 on May 29, 2009 10:39 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Pretty lame that they can’t broadcast the game inside the arena either.

I don't get this at all
Last time I checked… the NBC broadcast was free. I could see shutting it down if it were a pay-per-view, but it isn’t.
500 people watching TV in one place is no different that 500 people watching separately in their homes — except it uses less electricity(hey, maybe we can get an energy savings bill passed!)
