Caps furious at HNIC
CBC producers were told yesterday that cameras not only weren't welcome in the team's dressing room, but the public broadcaster would not be granted between-period interviews during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semi-final between the Caps and Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Caps still are upset that the CBC aired footage prior to Wednesday's Game 3 that included strategic information on the team's dressing room white board.
I'm not surprised the Capitals were miffed, but it was a very interesting inside look at the team's game strategy prior to Game 3 and I can see why the CBC made the choice. And while I'm not surprised the network won't be back in the dressing room (wouldn't an easier solution be to cover up the strategy board?) it is a bit curious that they aren't being granted those meaningless hallway interviews between periods.
This petty ban is being called "indefinite," but I wonder if this is something the NHL will look to fix. I'm sure there are rules when it comes to media access, ones that are more pertinent to the fans that those that concern Yanni concerts and building availability.
I can see why The Pensblog is associating pacifiers with the Capitals these days.

Better idea ...
The Capitals should start doing what I’d do in high school when an extremely persistent classmate kept trying to copy off my paper and I got tired of covering it up.
I wrote down all the wrong answers in full view, he took his paper up to the front of the room to hand it in while I “checked my quiz over,” and then I erased every single answer while he walked back to his desk and then filled it in correctly. My score = 95%, his score = 5% – and I never had a problem with him again. :)
Washington should use a fake strategy board for misdirection purposes.

Don't blame CBC, Caps
Reminds me of the time a local affiliate here in Dallas was allowed into the “war room” at the Cowboys training facility in Valley Ranch prior to the draft one year. They shot footage of Brian Stewart writing something on one white board, and unbeknownst to him, the Cowboys draft board was listed on another white board and within the shot.
So whose fault is it?
To me, it’s clearly the team’s fault. It’s not like CBC went into the dressing room with the intent of finding that information and divulging it to their viewers. If you open your house to the world, it’s your responsibility to make sure you hide what you don’t want the world to see.

Better idea still
get rid of those meaningless hallway interviews completely, and use that minute to show the fans something they might not have otherwise seen.

I’d love if they eliminated the in-game cliche-fests, too.

A: “Just keep playing well and give a full effort.”
Q: “What do you need to do to come back?”
A: “Just keep playing hard and getting shots on net and getting traffic.”

Go ahead James just bash the caps with your snarkey finishing comment:
“I can see why The Pensblog is associating pacifiers with the Capitals these days. "
Now we start to see where your real allegiances are, what’s next in three years will you be as xenophobic as Don Cherry?

Bah, you got me. Ran this site five years trying to be objective when all along, growing up in B.C., I hated the Caps. Deep rooted hate. Especially Rod Langway.
I heard Leonsis doesn’t like us bloggers either.
(And no clue where the xenophobic business comes from. Seriously.)

It’s gotta be a joke.
Plus, everyone knows that you’re a huge Canucks homer that hates the Blue Jackets.

Here's a tip:

And James you really should stop being such a Pens homer.

I’ve had my fair share of hate mail from those folks, too. That’s the way it goes.

Oh no, if the Penguins were watching television they’d find out such sensitive strategy keys as:
“Don’t let Crosby/Malkin have any room”
and
“Win the special teams battle. Outwork them.”
Specific and unexpected keys for the Caps!

Obviously, this is the reason the Caps lost game 3. :-)

Funny
I never got to see these “keys” to the game or whatever they were, I doubt they were that much of a big thing though, what were some of the things on the board?

Yeah, this is what I wonder too
It’s hockey, not the NFL. I can’t imagine their “strategy” would be any different than it was in any other game of the serious. I haven’t seen it either, but my guess is that it was “stop Crosby and Malkin,” and then a bunch of hockey cliches’ like “close the gap,” “short shifts,” blah blah blah.
It’s not cool of CBC to have shown it, don’t get me wrong. But it’s pretty stupid, I think, to react the way the Caps have. Do they seriously think that had any sort of impact on the game? I really don’t see how it could. I’m sure the Penguins have seen a trap, a 1-2-2, a heavy forecheck, an umbrella power play, whatever they decided to go with that might have been different.
The X’s and O’s of hockey aren’t exactly rocket science. I wonder why they even post those things up on chalkboards in the first place.

What! Deprive their players of the coveted HNIC towels?
Call the NHLPA! This is clearly a breach of some deeply buried but critical clause in the contract.
