2009 Stanley Cup final: A Jekyll and Hyde series

There's only one reason that an overwhelming majority of the pundits are picking the Red Wings to hoist the Stanley Cup about 12 hours from now, and it has nothing to do with Osgood's goaltending, Zetterberg's checking, Hossa's slump, Lidstrom's tender nethers or any or all of the above.

It has everything to do with where Game 7 will be played.

This has been a truly homer series, one of the most starkly divided best-of-sevens I can remember, and for that alone, it makes sense that Detroit finishes the job and wins its fifth Stanley Cup in 12 seasons.

The differences between the Wings' play at Joe Louis Arena compared to The Igloo, based on this admittedly small six-game sample size? Detroit's scored an average of two goals more per game at home, has a team save percentage a full 10 per cent better, has a power play effectiveness nearly double their road totals and a PK that has shutdown the Pens at a rate nearly 20-per-cent higher than what its managed in Pittsburgh.

Detroit has been on the power play more often at home, been shorthanded less, had 15 more hits per game and won nearly 56 per cent of its faceoffs.

As I've pointed out after both games in Detroit and in Pittsburgh, with two masterful coaches, the matchups have mattered in this series, and they should matter again tonight. The Pens simply need to generate better scoring opportunities, get more from their top line, play more disciplined and get a better performance from Marc-Andre Fleury. They need either Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin to be the best player in a game filled with future Hall of Famers.

Scoring first would help, too, as the winning team has done in all but Game 2. Detroit's 10-1 in these playoffs when they get the first goal and only 6-6 when they don't, while the Penguins have had better luck battling back, going 9-4 when scoring first and 7-4 when not.

But Detroit has also not lost a game when leading after the first (7-0) or second periods (12-0) and has allowed only 10 even-strength goals at home in 12 games. They're 11-1 at Joe Louis, with the only loss coming in triple overtime way back in Game 2 of the second round.

"We’ve just been way more comfortable on home ice in the playoffs," Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We were a great road team in the regular season. And we haven’t been as good. I think we’re 4-6 on the road in the playoffs. We’ve been way better at home, way more comfortable, way quicker, way more assertive. We look forward to that again [tonight]. In saying all that, when you come out in this rink or come to the Joe, you’re comfortable. This is where we work. This is where we live. It’s our fans, it’s our city. And we’re proud to be from Michigan and have the opportunity we do in front of our fans."

Pittsburgh's in tough, but the good news is that it's all down to this — and, hey, anything could happen.

But my money's on The Wing Dynasty, continuing its reign.

If the Pens get that first goal, I’d sure feel pretty good (even though they scored first in Game 2 and still lost).

It's still amazing

That after months of offseason conditioning, a month of camp (including 6-8 preseason games), 82 regular season games over 6 months, and 20-22 postseason games over two more, it comes down to 60 minutes of “who wants it more?”

Makes hockey the best game (and the Cup the best trophy) on the planet.

I think you’ve just guaranteed that the game goes into OT with that “60 minutes” line….

I thought about that too.

BTW

Game 6 of the Calder Cup Final goes tonight in Winnipeg, with Hershey getting a second chance to close out the series. Game 7 will be Sunday, if neccessary. Both games tonight unfortunately have the same 8 PM EST start time.

If there’s a Game 7, I’ll probably have some time to write about that series, but if not, I’m afraid it gets left by the wayside. Not enough people seem to care about the AHL.

I don’t really care about who wins tonight. On the one hand, I would like to see Crosby play a great game and stick it to all the whiny jealous people who think he’s overrated and over-hyped. On the other hand, I would like to see Osgood play a great game and stick it to all the people who continue to underrate him.

I hope for a few things from tonight’s game:

(1) There are no cheap calls – they’ve let everything go so far, and as much as I am against that attitude, they need to be consistent.

(2) There are no cheap goals.

(3) Hossa plays his best game, so he can feel good about his decision whatever the outcome.

(4) Bettman somehow gets tied up somewhere and the NHL finally stops having him hand out the Cup. No one needs to hear the winning owners’ thanked. Have the NHL bring back a Legend of the Game to hand out the Cup. When the Cup is handed out, no one should be booing.

(5) Now Im really stretching but after the Cup is handed out, keep the people on the ice to a minimum. You need, at most, a few camera people, and maybe a few interviewers. No family, no friends, no kids. The moment of skating the Cup is something to be shared amongst the team. There’s a reason that commercial with the quick clips of the people taking and skating the Cup is so great – cause its the hockey players winning the Cup that’s important and great to watch. Take the pictures with the kids and the agents and the people Ive never seen before off camera.

RE: (5)

1. That commercial is epic. Gives me goosebumps, even on the 1028287th time seeing it. Cripes- I watch it on youtube all the time.
2. Youre 100% right. I dont know when the tradition went off the rails (94? Rangers?). Its turned into a cup parade 2 step. Handoff-out-back-handoff. Cant they get wireless cameras or something? Its ridiculous.

Regarding the keeping kids off the ice: I think Giguere’s skate with his son is one of the most beautiful sporting images of the decade. You don’t think the families suffer enough to warrant participation?

Yes, to the other four. If Detroit could have clinched Tuesday, Bettman might have failed to make it, being tied up in Glendale, right?

Obviously I dont :) I dont watch the games to get attached to the people behind the scenes. But then again, I get annoyed everytime they show Malkin’s parents in the stands.

Im a Wings fan (obviously) and Steve Yzerman is a legend and personal hero, but Yzermans cup acceptance with his daughter was terrible. Really Steve? Your daughter helped win that cup? FFS. Keep the kids off the ice.

I think that was one of the first times that happened, as far as I can remember. I remember being so disappointed, as Yzerman is hero of mine too.

“Blah blah blah…Detroit is more experienced…blah blah blah…Detroit has the home ice…blah blah blah.”

Montreal Canadiens. 1971.

Detroit has the collective media hanging from their sack. Pittsburgh has the hunger and the drive. They’ve got more on the line.

Go ahead and put your money on the Wings—it’ll sure push up my payout when the Pens shock the conventional wisdom types.

We’re definitely overdue for a road team win. This is the 5th of 9 series this decade that has gone 7… you’d think at least one out of 5 would go to the road team.

It’s been tough sledding hanging from their sack, especially given Lidstrom’s injury, but I did pick the Wings in seven.

sledding hanging from their sack

Given now that we know what Lidstrom’s injury is/was, that’s a horribly hilarious way of putting it.

The Leafs won the Cup in 1967 but that hasn’t help them since.

imagining the child of a Leaf player back then, who might have been told, “One day, son, work hard, and this can be yours, too” while gazing at the Cup….he’s probably sitting back somewhere, cursing, “dammit, Pop, you lied to me….”, getting ready to watch game 7 with the same sort of bitterness we Wings fans felt prior to 1995 or so….

Even though the wins have followed the home-ice pattern...

I think Detroit got outplayed in the first two home games (but happened to win), and then outplayed the Pens in the next road two games (and happened to lose). In games 5 and 6, the home team did really seem to be the better team.

To me, the series’ storylines have been a back and forth of “Wow, I can’t believe the Pens are making Detroit look so ordinary.” to “Oh, Detroit made some adjustments and look dominant again.” to “Whoa, the Pens made adjustments and are making Detroit look pretty non-dominant again.”

I’m kinda not sure what to expect in this game.

I slightly disagree with your assessment of the games: I would swap your assessments of games 4 and 6. In game 4, Pittsburgh outplayed Detroit and rightfully won the game. In game 6, I think that could have easily gone either way.

The rest of your post I definitely agree with. I’ve gotten whiplash reading the back and forth storylines. Whatever happened to two good teams getting wins when they need them? I’m not sure what to expect from the game either, but I do have a hope: Wings win.

Dynasty talk over now?

Does a 2-1 Penguins win in Game 7 put to rest any talk of a Red Wings dynasty now?
