2009 Stanley Cup Photo Gallery: On The Front Page

I usually pull something like this together every year after the Stanley Cup final, and it takes a day or two for some of the front pages to come in. Here's a look at how various newspapers played the Penguins' big win.

First, the locals, with a couple from Pennsylvania and Michigan:

The big news in Hershey was about the Bears winning the Calder Cup:

And on the Detroit and area side of things:

Elsewhere in the U.S., the game didn't make a big impression on front pages, something I'd blame in part on the fact the game ended after 11 p.m. and that Saturday papers generally rely on more feature-filled front pages. Here were a couple I found from Buffalo; Toledo, Ohio; Billings, Montana; and Lakeland, Florida (?):

And, finally, here's how some of the top Canadian newspapers played the big day. Unsurprisingly, there's a lot of love for Crosby, including this one from his hometown paper in Halifax, Nova Scotia:

Love this one from Max Talbot's home province:

I didn't find a single European paper with the Cup on the front this year, which is unusual, but it may be that I missed a few. If you noticed any other great front pages that should be here in this group, fire me a link and I'll get them posted.

hahaha Absolutely. What a perfect way to capture all that is Max Talbot.

Max T. Superstar sounds like a name from a lost A-Team member.

Can Hardly Wait

If Quebecor and Xenophobe Pierre K. Peledeau purchase Montreal. Expect a $8 million a year contract for Max…

Toledo Blade

Toledo is generally a part of the Detroit market in terms of sports, so I’d toss that one up there with the Michigan papers.

The picture used by the Globe and Mail (and others) is my favorite one. He is one happy camper! I hadn’t seen any pictures of the Wings. The one on the Grand Rapids Press (and The Blade) shows the pain. Thanks for collecting these.

The article at the bottom of the page is much more amusing, however. :P
