2009 NHL Awards: Brind'Amour's Selke votes, Phaneuf for the Norris (and other voting oddities)
You know what? For the most part, I was pretty happy with the results of last night's awards gala (in terms of who won, not Chaka Khan's yodeling or whatever that was). The right players took home hardware, and the majority of the nominees deserved to be there.
Going further down the lists from the top three, however, and we get into some scary territory.
Last year, it was Jassen Cullimore receiving a Norris Trophy vote. This time around, Rod Brind'Amour got more than that for the Selke Trophy despite the fact he had a league-worst (among forwards) minus-23 in the plus-minus category, and Dion Phaneuf for some unknown reason got Norris Trophy lovin'.
The votes:

So, yes, some of the wacky votes are still in effect, even if the majority of the names up at the top are just fine. What's incredible is just how many different players receive votes for the Selke every year.
And I'm sure even Rod Brind'Amour would tell you he shouldn't have finished ahead of a lot of them.
A few more anomalies after the jump:
Hart Trophy: Most of the top votes were all fine: Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk, Mason, Parise, Crosby, Thomas Chara... etc. But 26 different players received Hart votes, including Evgeni Nabokov, Miikka Kiprusoff and Dan Boyle.
Norris Trophy: Sixteen players received votes, including Dion Phaneuf finishing 12th despite having a horrible year, and Brian Campbell, who was the No. 3 defenceman on his own team.
Vezina Trophy: Nine goalies received votes, in this order: Thomas, Mason, Backstrom, Luongo (who had one vote less than Backstrom), Nabokov, Lundqvist, Ward, Kiprusoff and Vokoun.
Jack Adams: Fourteen different coaches received a vote, including three from non-playoff teams in Barry Trotz, Peter DeBoer and Ron Wilson. Go figure.
Calder Trophy: Twenty different rookies got mentions here, with the only one who really sticks out like a sore thumb being Sabres no-name defenceman Chris Butler, who played half a season.
Lady Byng: The usual kitchen sink approach here: 71 players received Byng votes, with my choice, Nick Lidstrom, finishing fifth. (My third-place pick, Rob Scuderi, received just the one vote, so I was an outlier there.) Ryan Miller placed 28th, Roberto Luongo was 44th and Henrik Lundqvist was 55th. Maybe next year I go all goalies for the gentlemanly play award.
I'll have the full vote totals for every award posted shortly.

I’m surprised to see the DeBoer didn’t get more consideration for the Adams Trophy. It’s not as if Florida finished forever out of the playoffs, they lost the tie-breaker with the Habs.

I love this post
I know you’ve been doing this for years James, and it’s always one of my favorites because of how ridiculous some of the voting is.
Where did his first place vote come from? Someone who said “that guy’s still in the league? Give him a vote!”

Butler
He may have played half a season, but he turned into a rock-solid blueline presence by the end of the year (thanks mostly from Craig Rivet’s tutoring)
Calder Trophy? Of course not. But he’s going to be around a long time.

Someone picked him as the third-best rookie in the NHL last season.

Jonathon Toews essentially gets stapled to the bench when the Hawks go on the PK (or at least during the playoffs), so he’s a pretty awful Selke choice as well (though I think he could win one in the future).
Bruce Boudreau dropped badly in the Adams voting, after winning it the year before and taking his team from a bubble playoff team to a top 5 team in the entire NHL. He essentially did what Julien did (without goaltending help), but he went from the runaway winner to a footnote.
Props to Thomas for his season, but when he’s the runaway winner, you know it’s been a bad goaltending year.
Someone thought Brian Rafalski was the league’s top blueliner this year as well. Okay.

Nice to see Michal Handzus got 1 5th place vote. The Selke is ridiculous.
The West Coast is the Best Coast.

Antti Miettinen got a first place vote? James tell me that is a typo.. HAS to be a typo.. no one is that dumb to think he deserves a Selke!

According to a straight read of BehindTheNet’s numbers, he was the best at preventing goals. See James’ post here: http://www.fromtherink.com/2009/4/13/833792/2008-09s-top-defensive-forwards
Obviously a little more subjectivity is probably required here, but it’s not like there’s no reasoning to it at all.

Phaneuf getting a Norris vote is easy to explain: He got so much love for the trophy in 07-08, some writer (probably out East), who never saw a single Flames game this year voted based on name recognition.
Iginla being left entirely off of a Montreal writer’s Hart ballot in 2002 is still the single greatest joke I’ve ever seen in these voting tallies though.

Iginla being left entirely off of a Montreal writer’s Hart ballot in 2002 is still the single greatest joke I’ve ever seen in these voting tallies though.
1. It’s a secret ballot, it’s never been known who left him off the ballot, just that he wasn’t on somebody’s ballot. We don’t know where the reporter was from, or what his reasoning was.
2. A big debate in 2002 was whether a guy whose team didn’t make the playoffs should win the Hart. Is it not possible that the reporter left Iginla off his list because he didn’t feel players on teams that miss the playoffs should be considered? Leaving him off the ballot entirely might be seen as harsh, but it was a fairly popular debate and some people are pretty adamant in those opinions.
A couple years ago, a GM left Luongo off his top 3 goalies for the Vezina, when every other ballot had Luongo or Brodeur #1 or #2, helping Brodeur win a close race. It was odd, to say the least. He gave a 2nd place vote to Niklas Backstrom, who didn’t even place 3rd on the list (Lundqvist did).

Is it really necessary to ask writers to name the 5th most defensive forward in the league?
If you take away the name recognition votes that Datsyuk got as a 4th or 5th best guy, then Richards wins the award based on everyone’s top 3 picks. Incumbents will always garner a few charitable 4th and 5th picks, especially for an award as subjective as this one.

Campbell
Last year Campbell got a first place Norris vote, probably the same voter again this year…

I actually expected Horcoff to get some more votes. Considering the massive amount of defensive zone face-oofs he took. He wasnt bad in the plus-minus catagory. Played the toughest minutes for all oil forwards, I expected him to crack the top 30 at least.
Also I was all for Koivu > Kesler for the Selke
