A predictable first five picks and then things started to get interesting. I may have a more complete roundup come Monday morning, but here's the highlights of what some of the draftees and drafters are saying after Friday's first round:

#1. John Tavares, New York Islanders

"Yeah, I think I'm a guy who understands being in the spotlight, what it's all about, and how to handle all the expectations. I know it's only going to get greater. Like I said, it's an exciting time for everybody in Long Island's and where the team is going in the future, and so for me to be a part of that process, and obviously your goal is to bring success to where you're going to play."

#2. Victor Hedman, Tampa Bay Lightning

"My goal is to play with the Tampa Bay Lightning next season, so my main goal is that, and I'm going to work hard this summer to make the team next year. I'm looking forward to help the team, they struggled a bit this year, so I look forward to turning things around with that team."

#3. Matt Duchene, Colorado Avalanche

"If I had his [Joe Sakic's] number, I would [call him and tell him not to retire]. No, he's been my idol my whole life, and I got an autographed jersey of him in my basement. A guy I always looked up to and tried to model my game after and my personality after. He's everything any kid dreams of being."

#4. Evander Kane, Atlanta Thrashers

"I think I'm only going to continue to get bigger and stronger and hopefully by the summer I'll have put on enough weight and I think with my skill level, I might compete to make the team, I should be successful."

#5. Brayden Schenn, Los Angeles Kings

"I guess it's real nice for our family, a lot of hard work that me and Luke put into it. It's not easy. I'm proud of Luke and I'm sure he's proud of me. For the most part we are really excited."

Star-divide

#6. Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Phoenix Coyotes

How do you feel now that you're going to Phoenix?
"Yeah, I had the biggest day in my life, and it feels good, and I like Phoenix."
Have you been there before?
"No, but I hope soon."
Do you feel like you're ready to play in the NHL?
Yeah, more muscles and then I'm ready I think.

#7. Nazem Kadri, Toronto Maple Leafs

"Yeah, actually I don't think there's any [Lebanese players] playing the NHL right now. But it's nice for my community to kind of be recognized as a pro hockey player hopefully but I think a lot of stereotype are made that Lebanese, they don't set foot on ice but here I am. It's definitely nice."

Brian Burke, Maple Leafs GM

"I don't give a rat's ass about that stuff. The best hockey fans on the planet are not in Montréal, they are in Toronto. When we host this event in a couple of years and Montréal goes up to pick, this will seem like child's play for the booing they get in Toronto."

#18. Louis Leblanc, Montreal Canadiens

"It's impressive. I had goosebumps. There's not really any words to describe this feeling. My favorite team growing up and to wear this jersey tonight is unreal. Looking forward to this moment my whole life, and I'm just living it right now."

A lot of great stories in there.

Here's a list of picks from Round 1 and a decent look at who's left.

Brian Burke is a reality show in the making. I love that guy.

Too bad Down Goes Brown didn’t resurrect the Twitter feed for the draft/free agency. That would’ve rocked.

Those weren't really Burke's own words

You can tell because they sounded nothing like the real Brian Burke, (and even less like “Brian Burke”). It was merely Burke’s rough translation of what Grabovski had to say. A more accurate quote, taken from Sovetsky Sports, reads:

“I will not offer rump of field mouse for those who are to booing of our team – I think they are not Canadian, they are French now. When we are host Draft in some years time, and MontrĂ©al goes to on the stage for harvest of pick, we’ll go in the street and every minute of every day we’ll wait for them and we’ll fight. If someone so eager to engage into fist talk, we can always meet after season end on corners of Church and Jarvis roadways.”
