The Blues today bought out the final year of defenseman Jay McKee’s contract. McKee was due to make $4 million for the 2009-2010 season, completing a four-year, $16 million contract he signed in 2006. The Blues will be responsible for two-thirds of the $4 million, payable over a two-year period.

He was never the same after his collision with Mario Lemieux in 2001…..
Granted, he was still an elite shot blocker up until he got to St. Louis, but his effectiveness as a defenseman peaked in those playoffs.

I guess I was wrong…..he was still in the top 10 in the NHL in shot blocks last year.

…and the buy-out period ends relatively quietly?

Only McKee, Mclean, and McSchaefer.

The buyout period goes until tomorrow, no?

Nevermind, it ends tonight. The three fellows Bruce mentioned are the ones on the outs.

I’m kinda surprised the Wings didn’t buy anyone out. Cap space would be nice.

The only real candidates for buyouts probably wouldn’t buy them that mush space, I’m guessing. And if they bought out someone more expensive, they’d still have to spend money to fill the roster space with someone anyway.

Somewhat of a shock . . .
but not much of a shock. Underperformed for the money, which given the massive amounts of cash he was given, that couldn’t have been TOO unexpected. I guess what I didn’t expect was the Note to take this kind of action and cap hit considering this might be one of their most important offseasons . . . like, ever.
Did like watching him play when he could, but the dude’s ssssslllllooooowwwww and has little to no offensive ability, below average even for a stay-at-home defenseman.

It says a hell of a lot about the state of the NHL when a team on shaky financial ground like St. Louis willingly eats almost 3 million in cash.
I’m assuming the Blues did their homework and tried to find out if anyone would take him on re-entry waivers. I’m also assuming that since they bought him out, nobody was interested in McKee for even 2M next season. Pretty telling, I think.

You wonder why they wouldn’t just send him to the minors to get his cap hit off the books. It doesn’t make much sense to pay 2/3 of the contract and take the cap hit both this year and next year when they could have sent him to the minors, paid his salary for this year and avoided the cap hit for next year (where its likely to drop).

If they were the Flyers, Rangers, or Red Wings I’m sure they would. But paying out 2.7 or so million instead of 4 million is a big deal to a team like St. Louis (and most others in the NHL).

No one thinks the Blues will spend to the cap
Their number is artificially inflated anyway with bonuses to first round players that won’t be paid but count nonetheless.

this is exactly the kinda guy Glen Sather loves – a 4th-6th defensemen who eats up cap and roster space that could go to someone cheaper and with more potential.

I’m surprised Tucker wasn’t bought out. Ohh wait, we’re talking about the Avalanche front office. I should say I’m surprised he wasn’t offered a raise…

For all we know, he was offered a raise. Then Bill Daly informed the Avs brass that that was illegal.
In about 14 hours, however, they could re-introduce that offer to Tucker and be within the CBA rules, so keep your fingers crossed.
