How do they determine who they invite is my question? Was there a tryout training session or are they purely making the decisions from watching these players play with their NHL teams?

The other thing is that the team seems quite young. That is not necessarily a bad thing just an interesting point to note.

Really surprised at Corvo’s omission from the list.
A little surprised to see Umberger left out too…he seems like a Burke type player.

No Gionta or Blake Wheeler surprises me more. And while I like Scuderi, I’d take Keith Ballard over him any day of the week.

I remember Burke said it’d be a limited roster and we’d be “shocked” by some of the omissions so I knew players of the “old guard” like Guerin, Tkachuk and Weight were probably out.

That's an understatement

The forward group could end up REALLY young.

Ballard’s a very underrated defenceman. I have no clue why he’s not there.

Ballard is the biggest omission that really upsets me. He’s at least as good as half the guys they brought in. Scuderi had a great playoff run but he’s a 5/6 guy, Ballard plays top 4 and skates much better. I also don’t understand inviting Modano but not Rolston. Neither of them score like they used to but at least Rolston can still PK.

Um...

Need to brush up a bit on your Brian Burke/RJ Umberger history…http://blog.canoe.ca/thebrawl/2008/05/01/canucks_leafs_loss_is_flyers_gain_1

Callahan’s a little of a surprise as well.

But yeah, Ballard’s the most glaring omission. Tom Gilbert’s better? Really?

If you wanted a puck-moving defenseman, I’d have taken Corvo over Rafalski unless they wanted some sort of veteran leadership on that back end.

Jonathan Quick? Are they even planning on bringing three goalies if he’s the third?

Jonathan Quick? Are they even planning on bringing three goalies if he’s the third?

Yeah, really. I mean, no offense to the man, but shouldn’t there be at least some competition? Did Ty Conklin pee in Brian Burke’s Corn Flakes or something?

If by that you’re implying that Jonathan Quick is not better than Ty Conklin, then I invite you to choose your terms of our duel.

I assume if DiPietro is healthy then he’ll go, but otherwise why not invite Quick? Both Thomas and Miller will be over 30 by the time the Olympics roll around next year, might as well bring a guy who might be starting for you in 2014.

I’m not saying don’t invite Quick. He seems like a fine young goalie. I just don’t think you should go to camp with your three goalies already set. One injury or bad season and you’re left with egg on your face as you tell one of the black aces to get his ass to Vancouver. Besides, competition is good for a young goalie. Keeps him from getting complacent.

As for the question of whether Jon Quick or Ty Conklin is the better goalie…dude, I dunno. I think more than anything I just feel sorry for Conklin. Hasn’t he had his karmic punishment for ’06 by now?

Oh. It appears I took offense without actually reading what you wrote. I apologize. However, honor still binds me to our duel. Don’t worry, I’ll only wound you.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Quick being invited and sure, he might be the USA goalie in 2014—but Miller won’t be over 30 by the time of the 2010 Olympics. It doesn’t seem to me that Quick’s invitation has much of anything to do with Miller’s age.

You can make a case for Corvo to be on the team, but not over Rafalski. Rafalski was one of the few locks for the team going in so you shouldn’t be surprised about him.

Wow. No Gionta, Wheeler or Mueller?

No John-Michael Liles?

Mike Modano instead of Jeff Halpern, huh? Sort of an odd choice. Halpern’s been a long-time fixture for Team USA and Modano’s getting up there in terms of age.

So Brian Burke likes Rob Scuderi more than Ballard, Liles, and Leopold. Does that make TOR a front runner to overpay for Scuderi tomorrow?

by Fehr and Balanced on Jun 30, 2009 6:37 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

As I said on Pensburgh, a lot of NHL GM’s are probably sweet on Reliable Rob after the job he did on even strength against Jeff Carter, Alex Ovechkin and Eric Staal this post-season….Unless the Maple Leafs are stashing Jeff Finger in the minors or going to somehow trade him, don’t see how they’re in the Scuderi sweepstakes.

Yup. He’ll have a line of suitors when the clock hits noon. Good for him.

omitting stafford, dubinsky, and connolly from just the camp part seems strange.
