The top 100 unrestricted free agents
UPDATED: AUGUST 19
All right, I've already run though the full lists of goaltenders, defencemen and forwards that will be available July 1, but what follows is my master rankings of the top 100 unrestricted free agents. As per usual, I'll be posting as often as possible as signings are made when free agency opens at noon.
I'll be updating this list over the coming weeks as players sign contracts with their 2009-10 teams, so bookmark it for future reference (and also get instant updates on my Twitter):

A note on how this is ranked: One thing I've given some credence is players' ages, as I think that's a big factor in what type of contracts they'll sign, and I've also given weight to their performance last season. This is a relatively rough ranking based on where players fit in in terms of first line, second line, etc.

I’d take Laperriere on my team over Bertuzzi, Skoula, Afinaganov, or just about anyone in the 20 spots above him.

Lappy seems rather underrated by non-(Avs/Kings) fans.

He is closing in on 36 and is a third-line guy. I’m sure he’ll find a home, but I don’t think there’ll be huge demand.

Is he really 36? I find this even more surprising than when I found out Robert Lang was 38 last year; at least then I could think back to the mid-90s and remember that he was pretty good back then.

Okay, 35. Still about five years older than I’d have guessed.

Few remember the Blues/Rangers years of his career. Or that he was a junior scoring sensation.

I was never a big fan of his as a Blues fan...
He always seemed to come up with a clutch Charging penalty in the third period of a close game because he wouldn’t stay on his feet to make a hit.

I’m really looking forward to this list tomorrow!
If you update it regularly enough, I might just use this as my only source. Have you any idea of how often per hour you will update this list?

As soon as I know the details, it’ll go out on Twitter and then be up here. I’ll probably have posts for every deal, at least until about 5 p.m.

Looks like Mike Komisarek is taking the route of Jay McKee, Scott Hannan, and Derian Hatcher… higher end physical defensive d-men who sign with a new team for big money and are never the same afterwards.

James: tsk! tsk! MSM hype!
There were two Dmen who were top 60 (first pairing) in all Dman categories:
Even PTS
Even Goals
Even goals Against
PP Pts
PP Goals
PK Goals Against
Hits
Blocks
Only two are complete first pairing dmen.
They are:
Chara
and the guy you rank as the 9th best Ufa Dman option
Seidenberg
9th
Bahahahahaha

Seidenberg had all of 11 power play points, was minus-9 and makes for a solid No. 3 or 4 defenceman. Like the others he’s in range of. Hits and blocks are irrelevant in my mind.

Why? He’s an excellent defender. He played fairly tough comp in 08/09 and put up pretty good +/- figures.
http://www.behindthenet.ca/2008/basic_5_on_5.php?sort=18&mingp=60&mintoi=&team=CGY&pos=D
Although I will admit that under similar circumstances, he wasn’t as good in 07/08 though.
http://www.behindthenet.ca/2007/basic_5_on_5.php?sort=7&mingp=60&mintoi=&team=CGY&pos=D
Although in the comments of the following post, the point is halfway through 07/08, Sarich was the #1 defenceman in the league in ZoneShift (essentially, turning shifts that start in the defensive zone into shifts that end in the offensive zone). There are team effects involved, but it can’t be denied that Cory Sarich is a very good NHL defenceman.

Komisarek is quickly becoming a top pair shutdown defenseman, with leadership.

Komisarek is quickly becoming a top pair shutdown defenseman, when paired with Andrei Markov.
There, fixed.
Komisarek last year was pretty bad in general, and whenver Markov’s not on the ice with him, it’s a catastrophe. Believe me, you’d be better off with Zanon, because he’s much cheaper. Komi is not better.

Radek Bonk has played more NHL games (969) than anyone else from the 1994 Draft Class? That includes ex-teammate Daniel Alfredsson (932), Ryan Smyth (920) and 1st overall pick Ed Jovanovski (903).

Radek Bonk is possibly my favorite name in all of hockey. If I had a big goofy dog, like a golden retriever, Radek Bonk would be a great name for him. :(

With all due respect to Radek Bonk, who I felt was an underrated player who had the misfortune to be drafted high above his talent level:
Radek Bonk is a great name for a golden retriever.

I tried to get my wife to name our first born Radek. Doesn’t have the same ring to it without the Bonk though…

Bonk could be the middle name. Then he could just be Radek B. Smith if the Bonk was a little unconventional for him.

Yeah, but I’ve got a two syllable last name. You really have to have the impact of a short, sweet last name.

True. It wouldn’t work with my last name, either.

I kind of liked him when he was in Montreal… I know, I’m weird like that.
He would show us some flashes of Alexei Yashin, or pull off some great defensive mission. Then for 4-5 games he would be terrible… too bad he couldn’t put it all together on a consistent basis.

James,
What’s your take on the Caps’ signing of Brendan Morrison? Based on the terms, sort of a low risk, potentially high reward type of scenario don’t you think?

What was Toronto’s last offer to Dominic Moore? Considering his unproductive stint at Buffalo and the fact he’s still unsigned, it sure looks like he might not get anywhere close to what he was looking for despite being a UFA. The market is crazy, but it may not be crazy enough to accommodate Moore’s demands. Might have been the worst mistake of his career not to accept the Toronto offer?

They should be big about it and just sign him again. I don’t see a big downside to signing him for less than they offered in their extension and what’s the worst thing that could happen-they send him to the minors?

Why hasn’t Brian Burke signed Bertuzzi yet? I can’t relax until I’m sure he’s not going back to Calgary.

He has to see how may babies get punched and old ladies get kicked in the face by his current roster before he can decide if he need to bring in Bertha to bring the doucheness to the levels that Calgary sported last season.
