Gomez to le Habs for Higgins et al.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=283329
If this is true, then Glen Sather is a f***ing Jedi. I was hoping that Gomez just had an off year, but he really seemed to be unhappy for most of the season, and never found a groove. Coming back, native son Higgins, two good prospects, and $4M+ in cap space? I'll take it. Can any Habs fans weigh in on McDonagh and Valetenko?
Come on, Slats...now bring us the Heater....

Valentenko is signed in the KHL for the next 3 years.
McDonagh is supposedly a very good prospect… and Habs fans are pissed he was part of the deal.
Higgins has 1 year until UFA and is arbitration eligible.

Montreal got hosed on this deal, and I am beginning to think the 100 year pressure has cracked Gainey’s dome. Very curious contract pickup, smacks of desperation.

From the Rangers’ perspective, though, this only really makes sense if they pick someone else up – e.g., Havlat, Hossa, etc. (Was desperately hoping for Heatley, but looks like he’s headed to the Oilers.) Otherwise, they just traded away their leading scorer, and are worse than they were when the season ended.
Rangers, Royals, Raiders, Knicks...the man loves a winner.

most importantly, they’re out from the Gomez contract. That’s worth a lot more than whatever player gets his spot in the lineup.

Except the Rangers can’t win without a suitable player in Gomez’s spot. They really desperately need offence.

Come on, Slats…now bring us the Heater….
Heatley reportedly just went to the Oil for Smid, Penner, and Cogliano. Sportsnet via Kukla:
Amazingly cheap deal, I think. Especially strange in conjunction with all the “this trade has to work for the Senators” babble from the Ottawa camp, and the fact that every other team was crying about the asking price.

Well, maybe not “amazingly cheap”, but much cheaper than I was expecting, given the talk thats gone on lately about it.

and now the deal is off, after Heatley refused to waive his NTC. But TSN is now saying that the 12:00 AM EST July 1 payment 4M bonus payment can actually be made at any time on July 1, meaning that if he’s traded before 12:00 AM EST July 2, the acquiring team can still pick up the bonus that Ottawa doesn’t want to pay? This is getting more and more interesting, and we haven’t even started the UFAs yet.

The Take from a Habs fan
Gaborik…. enough said? Over rated and over paid, but that’s the way Slats likes to roll.
One big name for a ton of money, and no gelling line mates.
Higgins was a loss. Great character guy, decent hands and skating, and young. I was thinking that he was C material in about 5 yrs should he have stayed with the Habs.
Valentenko is just another Russian who’s happier at home than in the AHL. I don’t know money wise what he’s getting but I did get to see him in exhibition. Still a little CHL for my liking. Needs about 20 pounds and more confidence to make it in the NHL as a puck moving D, and 25 pounds if he is going to be the stay at home. I don’t know if he knows what role he’s best suited for. But definitely stiff like a junior hockey player while playing with the HAbs in the pre-season last year. I wasn’t overly impressed, though if you get the chance to see any vids from AHL he apparently looked good. But three years in the KHL is like the equivalent of a career as once they (Europeans) get the taste of living at home and playing in front of family they rarely make the jump back. And if he’s anything like Yemelin he’ll have unrealistic demands that cannot be met by the Habs, and they don’t like playing pro in the AHL. So… good luck with him. I don’t feel a loss to the Habs with him not being in the farm.
McDonough… wow. The kid is going to be big. Big, quick, sees the ice well, needs some time to develop as he’s still in College, but once he’s here we’ll all notice him. A loss to the future of the Habs D. But with Weber and PK Subban the immidiate future is A-OK!
