Rumours from Russia: Don Cherry doesn't translate well

Some tidbits from the KHL media today:

  •  Viktor Kozlov has officially signed with Salavat Yulaev on a three-year contract. Love this quote from head coach Slava Bykov: "Kozlov – great universal forward, and it's big success that he will play in our team. He is high-level man." I can dig it.
  • Avangard Omsk is showing some interest in both Frantisek Kaberle and Michael Nylander. "We want to see both these players in Avangard," said GM Anatoly Bardin. Which is interesting given most Caps and 'Canes fans don't want to see these two in North America next season. Both are signed for 2009-10 and overpaid given their contributions in 2008-09.
  • Alex Ovechkin won the Kharlamov Trophy as the top Russian player in the NHL earlier today. He's also agreed to take part in the Rusisan Olympic team's training camp in August, a camp that Nikolai Khabibulin is apparently going to miss. No word on why that is.
  • And, finally, I was given this quote from Don Cherry from an interview he did with AllHockey.Ru reporter Vladimir Dekhtyarev, but the HNIC icon doesn't translate all that well. "In general, where this league slides? I don't understand," Cherry is quoted as saying about the finals. "These guys are not capable even to fight or hit opponent normally, stealthily so that referee has not seen. Where it suits? I suggest to struggle with Colin Campbell's department which harms to hockey, transforms game into figure skating. Allow guys to play simply in hockey and will see the show! "
  • Maybe I could name this bit "bizarre translations from Russia?"

Reminds me of the classic NewsRadio episode “Super Karate Monkey Death Car,” where Jimmy James’ book is translated to Japanese and back to English. Any time you want someone to sound really stupid – say, perhaps, Gary Bettman – you can achieve similar results by going to Babelfish and running their stuff through the translator.

To wit: “In the new times when as for me we had guided the sign where illuminating together, that is best thought the player and the league in order to advance the thing which is to have Ted here that there is no sign which the fact that is better it is cooperative. And perhaps furthermore more the importance, as for me the governor what’s that you hear, it thought of that it is important: players’ heart.” – Gary Bettman

You are validating my inherent mistrust of strangers.

Gary Bettman doesn’t need a translator to sound stupid.

Now that we’ve gotten that joke out of the way……

"Hey! Farmboy! Maybe you can't count, but there are four of us and one of you."

"So get some more guys and then it'll be an even fight."

That episode never fails to crack me up.

I had a small house of brokerage on Wall Street… many days no business come to my hut… my hut… but Jimmy has fear? A thousand times no. I never doubted myself for a minute for I knew that my monkey strong bowels were girded with strength like the loins of a dragon ribboned with fat and the opulence of buffalo… dung. …Glorious sunset of my heart was fading. Soon the super karate monkey death car would park in my space. But Jimmy has fancy plans… and pants to match. The monkey clown horrible karate round and yummy like cute small baby chick would beat the donkey."

The population of Pominville keeps rising!

Why all the fuss over a pretty typical Don Cherry statement?

Nylander in Russia?

Please, please, please. That would be hilarious. I wonder what his Edmonton-hating wife would think about that.
That would be absolutely perfect and would serve that useless jerk well for backing out on a deal.
