Hossa signs with Blackhawks
As per TSN. I've got no clue how Chicago forecasts making their cap situation work long-term if this deal with Marian Hossa is longer than one year.
Early indications are this is a very, very long-term deal with about a $5-million cap hit. The Blackhawks were going to have difficulty going forward under the cap without this deal, so things will be very interesting for them going forward.
Hossa, however, is an excellent player, and an upgrade over Martin Havlat.
UPDATE The term is in fact 12 years and $5.2-million a season, about $62.4-million overall, and $53-million is paid out in the first seven years. The final five, then, would be for an average of less than $2-million a season.
UPDATE Here's Darren Dreger on this: "Hossa will make $59.3-mil in the first eight years and $3.5-mil over final four."

Stupid move. If he’s signing more one year deals, there are better opportunities to pursue. If its a long deal, CHI has one hell of a cap situation.

Wow this guy really must like being booed. From Pittsburgh to Detroit and now to Detroit biggest division rival? Very gutsy.

$10 on the hawks to lose in the '10 finals
and this does nothing to help me from getting Havlat and Hossa confused with each other, either!!

The math is never going to work – ever.
Aren’t Kane and Toews and Keith going to all need new deals at the same time?

Maybe Tallon signs Hossa long term and trades one of his 2 young guns next year…?

After next season is the real salary crunch for the Blackhawks.
To me, this must mean Chicago has a plan to move Huet. Unless somehow Hossa’s accepted another 1 year deal.

Pierre LeBrun: “12 years, $5.2 million per season for Hossa”
Which is about $22 million more over the life of the deal than what Detroit was rumored to offer.

They have to close this damn loophole yesterday.
I’m already sick of these deals.

I agree…James just quoted Darren Dreger who said Hossa’s gonna get $53 million in the first seven years of the deal (which will average $7.57mm).
The long-term, front-loaded contracts are a joke.

I really don’t care how you do it.
- Make any over-35 years of a multi-year UFA deal count against the cap regardless
or
- Limit the term to seven or eight years.
Those are probably the only two options I can think of.

I’ve been calling for this for year… hopefully finally it becomes recognized as more of an issue.

Or
just count the amount they actually get paid against the cap.

Or recognize that there’s no way to build a salary cap that is both workable and free of loopholes. Everyone who wanted a cap got exactly what they desired. I can’t help it if you don’t like the results.

Counting Hossa (guessing a 5.25M hit) for next offseason, it would be 8 players signed, for about 34M. That’s 4 forwards, 3 defense, 1 goalie. Versteeg + Barker need deals this year, and next year Kane, Toews, and Keith need deals. To say nothing of filling out the rest of the roster.

thats 22M in space to sign those 5 important guys, and thats only 13 players under contract. You still need a few more to fill out a roster.

Supposedly the Hawks are close to trading Huet ($5.6mm cap hit)

53M over the first 7 years of a 12 year ~63M deal. I wanna see the numbers on this, because there are rules about how much your salary can change year to year within a single contract. I halfway wonder if this deal might not be messed up and incorrect by the terms of the CBA, possibly throwing Hossa back onto the market? Doubtful, but Brule + Heatley have proven that teams don’t always “get” the CBA.

My pure guess:
$9 million first year
$8 million years 2-4
$7 million years 5-6
$6 million year 7
That adds up to $53 million.
Then the last three years would cost a total of $9.4 million (or about $3.13mm) and it tapers away.
Joke contracts. On the next CBA they should say on a long-term contract the cap hit is the average of the first five years of the deal. I bet that would limit these contracts.

I don’t think you can go from 6M to 3.13M though. It’s gotta come down more gently than that. I think it was Mirtle who once posted something about these long contracts, and how the numbers have to work within the CBA. Basically, your contract cannot change year to year by more than a certain amount.

When Lecavalier had his monster deal done it was off the first time, too – the league nixed it and the team had to rework the fluctuating numbers.

I’ll be interested to see how they managed the stepdown. Its going to be tough to get from an average of $7M for the first 8 seasons to an average of $1.5M for the last 4.
