Radim Vrbata and the unwanted comeback

102813-article-w81g0_medium

"He won't fit into our plans," Lawton said. "There won't be a roster spot for him. He has the right to come back and if he wants to he can, and he'll end up in Norfolk." If he does, Vrbata will still be paid $3 million, he just won't count toward Tampa Bay's salary cap number.

That Radim Vrbata wants to return to the NHL isn't a surprise. The Lightning, after all, should be thankful they were able to get out from under his contract for as long as they did.

The Czech winger, who had only one NHL season with more than 20 goals and 50 points prior to signing that $9-million deal last July 1, could potentially become a big headache for Brian Lawton and friends. The Lightning are now threatening to dump him in the minors as a way to dissuade any sort of comeback, but Vrbata's got $6-million reasons to make the trip, even if it means riding a bus in Norfolk for a while.

He could probably help an NHL club in a depth scoring role, as he did in Phoenix when he put up 27 goals in 2007-08, but not at that salary. It'd be better for everyone involved if he could be dealt, and Cristodero believes there's some chance of that happening, but you better believe the cash-strapped Lightning would have to somehow eat some of that salary.

Star-divide

Last season, players like Claude Lemieux, Steve Sullivan and Teppo Numminen all completed pretty remarkable comebacks to hockey, stories that made them favourites for the Masterton Trophy, but I can't see the same for Vrbata, even though he's in his prime and has played all of 20 games in the minors in his career. He may have left the league last December after struggling in limited ice time with a god awful team, but consider that, in the seven games where he played at least 15 minutes last season, he had three goals, an assist, 18 shots on goal and was plus-2.

Vrbata's biggest problem isn't that he's not a useful player — it's that he's guaranteed way too much money, regardless of where he plays in North America, and that alone makes this the unwanted comeback of the year.

They should have to buy him out if they don't have a spot for their prized UFA of 2008.

I’d take him on the Islanders. Yeah he is a bit overpaid but he is a good player.

Lets go Islanders...

Doen’t seem to be good ‘free agent PR’ for Tampa Bay. Can bet any future UFA’s will demand a no movement clause before going there!

The management will just try to force them out of it, I suppose. Wasn’t it Richards who had a no-trade clause and was traded anyway because otherwise he would have been scratched and/or sent down and if he consented to a trade, he wouldn’t automatically wind up with a lousy team?

Thank you.

I couldn’t remember which Lightning (Bolt?) was forced out.

They “threatened” to send him to Atlanta if he didn’t agree and he relented, allowing TB to trade him to SJ.

Boyle, that is.

Well, good ol’ Lou back in the swamp has gotten away with this kind of stuff multiple times.

Put him on re-entry. Someone will take him at $1.5m

I question how willing the Bolts will be to eat the other half of that, though.

It’s better than paying him $3m to play in Norfolk.

An idle threat, really. Will be interesting to see if Vrbata pushes this and comes over. He should.

A return a No Brainer for Vrbata

1) Considering that through his first 5 NHL seasons (one lost to lockout), Vrbata has(only-?) earned a total of 3.8 million, it would seem to be a ‘no brainer’ that he’d return despite the threats to ride busses. Its not like he’s made tens of millions and is nearing the end of his career or is likely to make more playing in Europe.
2) Doublng his life time earnings while playing in the AHL is probably palatable for him at this point and he probably believes if he performs well enough he might gain access out of hockey purgatory

I wanted the Isles to sign him pretty bad last season. I would be happy if the Isles traded for him straight up as-is, but waivers wuld work for me, too!

Lets go Islanders...

if Kotalik just signed for 3-million, some team with cap room, can definitely take on this dudes 3 million who needs second line scoring.

Have faith in Bob Gainey. The rumor is he signs everything that moves and can hold a hockey stick.

Hal Gill doesn’t move all that quickly, though, so maybe the “movement” requirement is optional. :-)

It makes him easier to catch. Besides, Hal Gill didn’t move fast 15 years ago when he showed up at Providence College. I’ve never figured out how he’s managed in the pros.

Size and positioning, I guess… Remember Chara doesn’t skate that well at all, yet he’s still considered one of the best at the moment.

I’m really not comparing Gill to Chara; just saying mobility isn’t an absolute must for a defenseman.
