Gustavsson chooses Toronto

28503_medium

Less than 24 hours after getting free-agent defenceman Francois Beauchemin to come to Toronto, Brian Burke found out that the Maple Leafs have won the Jonas Gustavsson sweepstakes.

Gustavsson, nicknamed "The Monster", will sign a one-year, $810,000 (U.S.) contract with the Maple Leafs, globesports.com has learned. The entry-level deal will also include a $90,000 signing bonus.

— Tim Wharnsby, The Globe and Mail

Gustavsson is a good choice for the Leafs, especially on a bargain of a one-year deal. As I've written in the past, more teams should take fliers on good European goalies given the success the likes of Jonas Hiller and Niklas Backstrom have had, and Toronto's well-positioned to turn over its backup duties to a 24-year-old rookie given the risk here isn't all that great.

If he stinks, he'll either end up in the minors or ride the pine without getting another contract. If he's great, he likely won't cost all that much on his next deal.

Like Fabian Brunnstrom, Gustavsson has come out of nowhere in Sweden recently, playing in the Elitserien only the past two seasons after he was a division lower prior to that. He is young, however, and we've seen other netminders excel after his age in the NHL, so why not?

While at the world championship, Gustavsson expressed interest in playing in Toronto, and given the opportunity for him there, I'm not surprised that's the route he's gone. The only thing we don't really know is if he's a flash in the pan or something more.

Yeah, the Leafs only scored 250 goals last year, good for 10th in the entire NHL.

Just imagine!

Hahaha!!! Good point. I’ll try not to let facts get in the way. You think they’ll trade Kabby for a scorer or just keep that monsterous defense?

Cheers,
Matt

I’m a huge, HUGE, Kaberle fan, so I hope they do keep him. I think with all that TRUCULENCE on the back end, the Leafs have a need for a solid, puck-moving, power play QBing d-man in Kaberle.

Here’s a post I wrote about the Leafs’ defense, who’s in, and who’s out, if you’re so inclined:

Leafs lost Antropov and Moore but I really think that they can replace some of those goals with a couple of Tlusty, Bozak, Hanson, Stefanovich, Stalberg.

Tlusty will be interesting to watch given the way he finished his AHL season. He could be the answer to some of their issues.

Tlusty and Bozak are both unknown quantities so it’ll be very interesting.

The Monster

Why a 1 year contract? Is there some other goalie burke is looking for
next year? Luongo? Turco? Just curious. I know after next year he is a RFA ( if not resigned) , but if he does over perform ( which I doubt) would he not be a RFA target from another team.

I like the look of this leafs team, and that is hard for a habs fan to write and say out loud!

Due to his age, I believe Gustavsson was limited to a one-year, entry level deal. Someone can correct me on that, but I’m fairly certain that’s correct.

Even if he could have been signed to a multiyear deal, I’m sure he would have refused it given the salary constraints.

That is correct.
