Hockey Canada's new logo unveiled
Well, there it is, the new logo. There are even a couple mooses thrown in for good measure (click above for the large version) making it about as Canadian as can be. (Hockey Canada has a funky time line of all the country's international sweaters that's worth a look, too.)

They're for sale now here (and soon everywhere) for $135 for a replica and a whopping $400 for an authentic.

I like it!
‘Course, the Hockey Canada shirt/hat combo I got in Prince Rupert a couple weeks ago are now outdated… looks like I’m going to have to start saving my pennies again.

What brought you up to Rupert, Z, if I may be so bold? It’s about as unArizona as you can get.

Alaskan cruise! Prince Rupert was very nice but someday I want to venture to a “real” Canadian city (as my buddy from Toronto likes to tease me). But I did get to see a sporting goods store with hockey equipment while I was there – which, for those of you who aren’t from around here, is about as amazing a sight to an Arizonan as a cactus field in Saskatchewan. :P

I count 15 maple leaves inside the main logo which is, of course, a maple leaf. Is that enough?
by dzuunmod on Aug 17, 2009 6:13 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Nope, that’s why the sticks from the KHL logo are in the smaller maple leaf dead centre.

Maybe that’s too obscure, but Canada has won a total of 16 Olympic medals in hockey, between the men and the women (9 gold, 5 silver, 2 bronze). Maybe the 16 total maple leaves are linked with that?

a bit
hokey, and customized to Vancouver, but overall I like.

Customized to Vancouver? how do you figure?

The artwork inside the maple leaf is particular to the Vancouver area, I believe.
Independently, I like the maple leaf logo, and I like the artwork. Together, I am not a huge fan. Its just too busy for a hockey jersey.

You’re right. The artist is from the Musqueam band, whose reservation is located in the south-west corner of Vancouver.

Because the city is littered with First Nations art. Look at the Canucks logo as an example. Vancouver celebrates First Nations culture quite a lot.

Are there a lot of prominent tribes in the Vancouver area? I know there is a rich history of Native art and culture in the Pacific Northwest, but I’m curious if the peoples are still highly visible in the modern society.

Well, when I was in Prince Rupert there were totems everywhere – natch, those are largely for the tourists but we did notice in the literature that the First Nations are widely represented in BC.

It’s pretty similar to the rest of the Pacific Northwest. Vancouver embraces it more than other large cities like Seattle, but it’s mostly scattered throughout the city rather than highly concentrated. You’ll probably see it emphasized during Olympic coverage. UBC has a longhouse that’s used for a number of private ceremonies, and the campus even hosts conferences for First Nations tribes to convene.

Unlike the R.O.C. British Columbia is largely unceded First Nations territory.

Carey Price is from the Vancouver area and his mother is a former chief of the Ulkatcho First Nation. You can see his ties to the First Nations represented on his mask.
by Habs on Aug 17, 2009 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okay, okay, as a native British Columbian, I’ve gotta interject here. We’re using the term “Vancouver area” a little too liberally here, as a place like Anahim Lake, where Price is from, is about a 12 hour drive away.
The province as a whole has plenty of native influence, but much of the art is from coastal tribes (many on Vancouver Island) and the Interior. B.C.’s population is about 4.5 per cent native, but very little of that is actually in the City of Vancouver.

That’s what I was trying to get at, but explained way better. The city of Vancouver celebrates the heritage but isn’t a concentration of First Nations culture. Also, agreed on the liberal use of “Vancouver area.” I’m not entirely certain where the Musqueam band (see a few comments up) is, but I’m pretty sure the south-west corner of Vancouver proper is basically Marpole, not exactly a native hotbed.

The Musqueam are the one exception. They’re the only Indian band within the city, on a reserve “located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River.”

Ah, there it is, right between Marpole and UBC Endowment Lands. I keep thinking Marine Drive is directly along the coastline, and anything else along the way is more Endowment Lands. UBC has a ton of private land, it’s easy to take a blind eye to it when you shuttle to or from the campus for work or school.

It reminds me a lot of the double-headed eagle of Tsarist Russia in a way – I think because it is so ornate and obviously symbolic (with the maple leaves, moose, beavers, salmon, and hockey players).

The low res jersey shots make the maple leaf look like it’s made out of suede, which would be at least as cool as the neat tribal design.

The intricacy of the Native art in the logo probably won’t show up so well on TV, but I think it’s going to make some sweet looking souveniers( hats, t-shirts, etc.).

Hmmm
So I guess Canada really loves its Inuits.
Honestly, way too busy for me, looks like a graphic t-shirt smashed/hidden awkwardly inside a typical Team Canada jersey. Kudos for trying something new, and the idea of blending modernism with a classical symbol like the maple leaf is a good idea for bridging the gap between people that want change and people that want the same old same old, but the raw amount of stuff in there just looks trashy and cluttered. At least it looks good from a distance.

I don’t really care about having the design inside because unless you’re buying one what’s going inside won’t clearly be visible, but I like the rest of it. Simple lines in classic Red and White. Nice.

When is the roster chosen?
I want to get a specific players jersey, but I feel like they’re not picking the final roster too soon before the Olympics start.
by Its Cold In Here on Aug 18, 2009 10:07 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
For the record, I do like the jersey. Not as much as the hockey player in the maple leaf, but well enough to buy one. Which is all Hockey Canada really cares about anyway.
But why does the leaf not have a stem? Someone pointed it out to me and now I can’t unsee it.

The final roster will be revealed in mid-December I believe.
