While pressure builds on Tom Hicks, owner of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars, to sell one of his teams to satisfy his creditors, a source close to the Hicks Sports Group said Tuesday that the hockey team will not be affected.

HSG has until August 2010 to satisfy debt payments before creditors could initiate any kind of takeover, the source said, adding that the deadline is 10 months later than some creditors had initially assumed. HSG owns and manages both franchises.

"There is a plan in place, and we're following the plan," the source said.

Is the ‘source’ a Jedi? Cuz that was one of the smoothest “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for” bits I’ve seen regarding the slowly-coming-to-the-surface financial troubles of the HSG.

Hicks here watched Empire and Jedi last week and ever since then, he’s been trying to do the Jedi mind trick. The crazy bastard thinks he can levitate the Stars with his thoughts.

Hmmm

Does that make Steve Ott Salacious Crumb?

And how many Jedi children do I have to slaughter to get the Stars Ice Girls to dress up in the Leia Bikini?

The Rangers are at least in the position of having the best minor league system in baseball. By this time next year, their rotation could be fronted by Neftali Feliz, Derek Holland, and Martin Perez. The ability to be both cheap and good (very, very good in the case of Feliz) is a huge bonus in this situation.

How do the Stars’ prospects look?

Oh…I was so ready to jump on this…and then you saved yourself with the “…in baseball” part ;)

Interesting

I wonder if Hicks regrets partnering with Gillett to buy Liverpool?
That seems to be the source of the problems.

Liverpool supporters sure regret it. At the time of the deal Hicks and Gillette swore up an down that the club wouldn’t have to finance the debt. Now…

Why did he buy into Liverpool? Was the purchase driven by Gillette and he just needed more money, so he convinced Hicks to help, or is Hicks interested in soccer himself?

Because Hicks is trying to purchase progressively more irrelevant sports teams in the domestic US market? I hear he’s looking for a WNBA team next.

I think it’s some form of super-rich person Bingo.

EPL teams can be quite valuable. There are huge merchandising opportunities and the best clubs are pretty much global brands. I think Gillette and Hicks thought that they were buying a cash cow(that they could pay for with club revenues) and that in the worst case scenario they could unload it at a profit to a buyer from the Middle East. They may still be able to do that last part.

Pretty much

Gillet is all about buying a brand. He did a phenomenal job in Montreal and I think he was buoyed by that success to expand further afield into the Premier League and NASCAR.

The Rangers are doing really well, so if they make the playoffs, Hicks should be rid of them in no time.

Hopefully.
